Anyway, nailing the kickstart payer to his level or have him loose the full benefit if he want to move to town or city is not nice.
I agree here, paying the rent difference (or having the option to upgrade for a one time ingame payment later) and still having the other kickstarter house benefits (i.e. special design, free servant, vendor, interior) should be an option.

Don't want to end like with Grandfathered houses in Ultima Online, which made you loose all houses you had from the past if you wanted to take part in progress or take chance for a larger house.

Ummmm, if you allow upgrades to higher housing tiers to be tax free as well, sooner or later *all* of the city and town houses will be tax free, and the only ones who pay taxes are the villagers. There are enough Citizens and Knights currently pledged that could conceivably take over the remaining city and town houses.

No Icepick they won't. The only tax free is from Kickstart...at least so far. So technically it's all tax free now so it can't increase. On launch there will be some housing available to non-KS folks, then people will have to pay taxes.
Allowing KS folks to upgrade does not really affect the overall taxes as there are none and by the time the game launches there should be house available as I believe Richard was saying they currently have an excess.

If a Kickstart account would be allowed to place his deed on a higher ranged plot, this would happen only in the future, if the game is live for a while (maybe after completing year 1).
This would assume also, that there is a free plot in the wanted size, and that the kickstart player can pay the deed difference between village plot and new plot.
Tax free, tax difference between village and town/city lot price or what ever, this is a topic for another day.
But indeed wanting to go with the game as it evolves and getting a home in an uptown location should not give the Kickstarter citizen or knight the penalty of stripping him from all the house bound benefits he had with his village home.
    Best greetings from Germany

Upgrading your deed form a lower type to a higher one will most likely be allowed. They're not going to limit you to where you can live. Players will become richer and will want to have a better class of living and move up to a town or a city.

As I see this as a deed upgrade and not a replacement, whether or not you pay taxes on that deed should depend on whether that deed was purchased during the KS/SotA campaign. Tax-free status is tied to the deed, not to the player / account.

Tax-free deeds are a unique backer reward currently. However, it remains to be seen if in the future they will allow players to purchase new tax-free deeds (or convert existing taxable ones) in-game at a later point, either using in-game gold or RMT. They have hinted at paying taxes using RMT, so it's within the realm of possibility.
