Here's what it looks like in front of me. It actually looks a lot darker in-game; so much so that there's no detail in the rocks. The screen-shot is not accurate (even so, it's still too dark):

It might be. I haven't seen any Windows users complaining yet.

Here's a comparison between R38 and R39 QA, first a screenshot from R38 (also note the FPS):

Here's the same view in R39 QA that I had open only moments before (again, also note the FPS):

I think it's more of a monitor thing. And I think it's more related to gamma and black levels, due to my experience with OS X. (which unfortunately I may not be able to do much about for a while, the graphics chip on my 17" MBP finally gave out now that I've actually been using it. There are people who can repair it, but it will not be fast, and I still have IRL stuff occupying my time. In the meantime I have dropped the SSD into an old Core 2 Duo MBP)

    - When I play on a TV set, I have to set the color all funny to get enough contrast to pla
    - When I play on a MacBook Pro, I have to use a custom gamma that causes other things to look wrong, in particular the black background to the forums looks kind of brownish. Even the Light spell doesn't help until I do this.

I think a more accurate description would be "too dark / poor contrast on properly calibrated monitors". You have to really mess up your black levels to see anything.

EDIT: It also depends on time of day in the game. Around :47 and :49 in the hour Earth clock time there is a shift in the contrast that makes it much more playable.
