This posts talks about resisting magic types.

I'm going to talk about how some games do resist magic, and the "right" way resist should be done.

Certain games resist is very basic, just 1 stat has it, like UO did in the past with resist magic as a 'trainable' skill 1-100.

D&D had attributes which added to a d20 roll for you to overcome the power of the spell being casted from the power of the caster. Charm would be against intelligence, death magic against constitution, illusion maybe against wisdom, and so forth. The fact was it wasn't rolled up into 1 stat. Chars that are strength focused might have a diff resist type than others.

In games like WoW (and I think most MMOs) resists work off many resist types, which makes for many resists gear and monsters that resist their native type, or might have diff resist types. Also this gives incentive to wizards to reduce enemy resist type through talents/skills/gear.

    Fire resists
    Ice Resists
    Air reists
    Water resits
And yes, even chaos resists (all magic should have some form of resists, I know currently it seems choas doesn't want to have programmed resists, and that will make it OP, as there will be no reason not spec into Choas unless dmg is lower than other class/types as a tradeoff).
    And so forth...

Also this gives you the devs to program more equipment to give them base stats according to their resists.
In WoW for instance one of the first main bosses was Ragnoros, which a lot of people needed FR (Fire resist) gear to beat. And no, there was no little question mark above his head, it was fun, challenging, and very memorable to slay him with your guild. People had to search out for this gear, people needed to have FR to beat him, and the tank definitely needed FR.

Also it allows for mob types to be immune/highly reistant to a certain sphere a magic.

Fire elemental will be immune to fire, but take 50% more damage from water/ice tree.

Red dragons might have high fire resists.

Black dragons might have high acid resists (like in D&D).
