    Does anyone know why?

Other than it has always been a rule?

I guess this is easier to say 'No' at everyone than moderating every single players for bad and/or double meaning words

just a guess. but, words may not show up well on cloaks, etc. the devs may have spent a lot of time working with people to get something that looked good enough.

If I remember correctly, that's exactly what happened.

Way too much moderation needed, wasn't worth the hassle.

    Greetings @Tailz
Could you please post a screen shot of some of the Heraldry that has words. I wanted to have some of the Virtue words in mine. I could Photoshop Truth in a curve and place it at the top. But I agree that Port does not need to spend time on deciding if user text is appropriate and what languages are allowed to be in Heraldry.

All the above statements as to why verbiage is not allowed in SotA Heraldry are correct; this, in addition to the original reasoning, which is that lettering, words or phrases are not allowed in the core Heraldry (following medieval Heraldry rules).

We have Darth Vaders and R2D2s, but we gotta adhere to the original heraldry rules for immersion's sake.

The original rules of civilization also probably didn't allow for digging out giant dungeons beneath popular cities with rooms where trolls and skeletons would spawn.

    Thanks @Ravalox

I was apparently mistaken, as I thought words used in heraldry and patents were "Mottoes"... Often a war cry form a battle early on, and then expanded quite a bit later on... I also thought that the use of a motto was pretty much up to each individual's discretion, allowing for almost anything to be used, and not required to be used by family lineage (except for the Irish)...
