I'm guessing you have a high Sun Attunement and shot an undead during the day light? Attunement effectiveness was cranked up a bit and searing ray gets damage bonuses during the day and vs undead.

Is it just me or will this make ghosts incredibly powerful against anyone without high death attunement?

Looks like the actual problem is that criticals are not showing as criticals. That was probably a critical hit but just didn't show it.

Yah, critical damage for machine was increased and criticals are not showing up as criticals currently. Looking into that.

Banish undead crits were not showing as crits a few releases ago.

No, I don't think that's how it's supposed to work.

I think undead would be VERY powerful against someone that has high LIFE MAGIC attunement. But would also take tons of damage from those folks. Meanwhile, people with high death attunement would probably find it MUCH harder to do damage to undead, but should take LESS damage from DEATH MAGIC (like what the ghosts use). Of course melee weapons used by skeletons, for example, have nothing to do with life or death magic so that would work normally.

@Chris, please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Unless I am mistaken, 100 attunement (npc with 100 player with 0) now increasse damage by 125%. I'm not sure how much attunement ghosts have in death, but I'm expecting high.

So spells like banish undead should do less damage the more skilled you is in life magic?

Think of it like this. Attunement is a tug of war.

If you have super high Life Magic and a Ghost has super high Death Magic...you should do a TON of damage to them. But they should also do a TON of damage to you. If you have super high Death Magic and fight a ghost, you should both have a harder time doing damage to each other and taking damage from each other.

Back to the tug of war reference. If you both have death magic attunement, it's like you're pulling on the same side of the rope. If you have Life but the ghost has Death, it's like you're pulling against each other.

Maybe this will make it more clear. If you have 50 Life Attunement and the ghost has 80 death attunement. Then you're basically hitting the ghost with a 130 adjustment with your banish undead spell.

But when the ghost attack you with Death Ray, it's basically hitting YOU with a 130 adjustment.

Confirmed. Criticals were not being reported as criticals. Fixed and in the patch after next. Also, this was only broken for magic and not melee.

I'll have to look at how Bzus set up the undead to know for sure. He might have just turned up their death attunement without lowering their life attunement.

I'm not disputing the way attunement works for magic vs magic. However, if you are an Archer with no life or death attunement, the ghost still gets an 80 attunement bonus but you get nothing. Back when 100 attunement meant a 50% increase this might not be huge but with the 125% that 80 might be near to doubling damage against you. You can't mitigate that without training magic(no resists except for attunement AFAIK)

    Oh ok....yeah you're right.

I think that's exactly where you'd want to use weapons (not currently in the game) that would augment your attack strength vs. undead. Silver for example.

But what I don't want to see is people running around being tanks that have no weaknesses. We've been doing that for 23 releases now and I LOVE the changes to attunement because for the first time we have a real choice to make in character progression. You can't be unstoppable against undead, you can only be great a damaging them or horrible at damaging them (while being more protected). You can also use the environment, and attack the undead during the day time, or have a high death attunement and high sun magic skill. But you can't get all benefit and no risk any longer. You have to pick a lane, and in PVP that means you now have a weakness, always.

That makes perfect sense to me.

Don't get me wrong, I like tradeoffs.

My original comment was just a cautionary note on using the attunement multiplier as a mechanism for balancing mages. Overtuning has pretty far reaching consequences.
