player-run servers for SoTA?

    just like UO had some free or player-run servers, is there any for SoTA?

    (or anyone working on creating one?)

    reason: so we can stealth un-nerf everything back to normal!

    not sure, but how come UO had them? were those free servers allowed officially?

    I don't believe so, but I would be surprised if they were.

    SotA is struggling to attract legitimate paying customers... why would they allow their IP and years of work to destroy their IP and years of work, and take all of us with it?

    okay, if player-run servers aren't sanctioned then i guess the people who make them aren't asking for permission.

    Those player run servers were not sanctioned in any way. The server software they used was written by third parties and not Origin.

    That's my assumption too.

    It's always good to have choice. There seems to be many things wrong with the current state of the game.

    Not saying player-run servers would solve every problem, but it's conceivable they could be better.

    Those against player-run servers are most likely to be either a die-hard fan of the franchise/regime, or one of those RMT-ers that are a cancer to the game.

    Weren't the player run UO servers started because the UO demo disk had the server software included?

    Player run servers work great for some games and not for others. I disagree with you that they’re a good idea for this game. You seem like a nice guy generally, and right now it seems like you’re trolling, which is unlike you. Let’s avoid derogatory statements.

    The point I was making is that the RMT folks who are playing this game as a profit venture obviously would not like the idea of player servers because that would end their pursuit.

    The cancer part came out, I admit, due to my frustration, but it is not unfounded.

    Meh, not interested. I prefer a global server for all. I dont want to be on a player server with just a handful.

    I'd actually like to see this some day, perhaps sooner rather than later -- as has been suggested during the KS that this could occur after EP5.

    But I'd go a step further and give the community just enough access to modify both server and client. The game isn't extensible and certainly doesn't support mods, but I would really love to see that happen. I say let the larger community (especially outside of SotA core players) have at it and see what happens. They've been known to create some truly wonderful things for many games.

    I'm a little surprised that someone else actually remembered that. :) I was the one who originally asked about it way back when. Remembering the old NWN servers.

    I wouldn't want to see just another instance of the game itself. What would be the point? But where small groups of people could use the game mechanics and assets to create their own vision of their own world. That would be cool.

    Perhaps maybe one day they would do like other games where you can rent / sub a server example: BF4 you can rent a server.

    The UO unofficial shards were just that...unofficial and NOT sanctioned by Origin.
