It was mentioned a balance between Recipe and Fast Crafting was being sought.

I think a simple answer to this is "pass the test"
Discovery in crafting is fun. Initial labor is fun. (Wurm Online, Notch + Rolf) One learned, it may become tedious. A Tale in the Desert had a good solution to this with automation. The automation approach likely fits since SotA may incorporate mechanical aspects. After making all the little bits to make the whole, you then learn how to make the bits to make the machine that makes the bits. Great for advancing crafting but bad on noobs since you can crank out thousands to their one.

To balance this there are a few drivers. First is repetition past a certain point doesn't advance you in ability nor diversity. High players move to higher things. Another is Fame - Quality - Unique. it's the old Hand Made perfection vs run of the mill low q parts. And finally the pyramid.. for the best item, hand made perfection requires time. As a crafter advances there should still be a minimum time it takes them to make even the simple item. To make their high item takes a lot of time. To make the low items it needs would still take a lot of time and is too low of work for them to gain from. So the master employs the masses.
Loved the earlier post on fame.
