ring of fire not landing horizontal w/ ground

Ring of Fire no longer creates a ring of fire that lands horizontal w/ the ground. Instead, what we get is a ring that is rising at a 45 degree angle from the horizontal plane of the ground.

Is this by design? It was not in the release notes and I do not see its usefulness as it hides the rings actual area of effect, making it more difficult to gauge its effectiveness.

I will add: I play on OS X client (in case this makes a difference).
