https://shroudoftheavatar.net/so-long-and-thanks-all-caltrops Thanks for all the work @Titania Xylia. The site will be missed.
Wait . . . . .why??? This was a much appreciated resource that will be sorely missed. If you can just hold out until Chris balanerfs archers again, i'm sure people will be flocking to the game. Or , if you can just wait until Chris gives his 2021 Roadmap vision, it can't help but instill confidence in the game. I think the new game server he put in has capacity for over 300 concurrent players, so now we can finally grow the population. Please don't go!, how else will we document the everlasting downward spiral? @Chris Keep working on that combat balance, i'm sure that's what is holding us back. Seriously tho, Sad to see the last semi-viable fan page shut down . . . your site will be missed.
If anyone needs a place to host any of the stuff leaving sota.net let me know. I'd be happy to give it a home and let it continue on. Laz
I've used your site many times @Titania Xylia . Thank you for your effort and I also add that this will be missed.
incredibly sad to see this. i loved the statistics available on the site. i hope that you take Lazarus up on his offer to continue hosting. in any case, a huge thank you for your contributions!
We really NEED this site. And NO this is not the time to introduce auction houses or vendor searches with prices.
As long as prices aren't listed. This is exactly why, from Raph Koster, Game System Designer for both Ultima Online & Star Wars Galaxies: "Do Auction Houses Suck?"
I agree an auction house is not a good idea. Being able to find what you need tho is only benificial for everyone involved. And reading that there may be an even easier-to-impliment way to have an item search, which would near-exactly match SWG by just making an in-game bulletin board that shows advertisments that shopkeepers will have to manually enter and manually list every item they have for sale or want to buy. Then just build a keyword search into that. That will allow folks to find stuff in the scope of people putting forth the extra effort and add more things you have to do to ensure you have a successful vendor. Itll also end up being a sort of hangout spot for traders. If you want to include everyone who just wants to sell thier stuff and isnt into hardcore vendor managment, make it an item search, ive noticed these days more often than not people vouch for convenience over anything else. But a bulliten board with a keyword search would basically just be a better version of trade chat that works even if buyer and seller arent onine at the same time. Might be easier to make too.
It would be fun to have Raph Koster read all the Vendor Search threads on the forum, play around in SotA for a bit, and then give his current opinion in the context of SotA's player vendor design. Any rich players out there want to cover his consulting fees?
The s is the big divide between players in MMOs, I think: "In particular, the merchant class was created to fulfill the fantasy of running your own business." There are players who like the idea of having their own shop, which sucess is determined by their and/or their guild's cumulative efforts, and there are players who want as little involvement in a game economy as possible as they don't want to play as a merchant. Historically, this is how merchants functioned, traveling from place to place, buying goods they don't necessarily need but want to resell in a more centralized location for a skim of the profits. A lot of players asking for a centralized market/vendor/auction house don't consider what they are asking for is tantamount to the complete elimination of merchant gameplay.
@Lazarus Long had a good discussion about this thread and Raph's article on NBNN News today: Season 6 LIVE! Lunch With Laz & Jack. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/888954106
The API data is an awesome resource for many reasons. I really do like to see who has killed the most elves, destroyers, etc. Maybe aim to kill the most of them and be the leader in something. Sparks competition. Now no one will ever know when I end up killing more Razorback Destroyers than anyone else... something to work for when you get bored with other things. Man, what a loss.
