I'm having a long conversation with Notus, it's one of the key moments of the plot, and while I'm having this conversation I'm getting lots of notifications "X is online", "Y is offline" - this sort of chat spam needs to be split out of whatever category it's in that's required for the conversations.

Another one of those elements hat shows that immersion/story is not as important as MMO-features...

I would really like to turn off messages about other players being online or offline.

Uncheck "Misc" in the chat configuration.

Problem is Misc covers a lot more than just on/off line messages :(

I am not aware of any such option for the NPC chat window, can someone point me to it?

Also note that, when configuring the chat tabs, unticking that option will remove all the notifications like 'Received an item' and 'Made a note of this in my journal' which are actually necessary to the NPC conversations and understanding what's going on. That's why I said:

As Adventurer I would like a QUESTLINE only window :) The Pop up window shouldn't come autom., while enjoying a great moment.

As I was in the last Minute and received the Shroud I got a message from a friend...

It's okay, but better may be a chat sign in the right corner, like over encumb...
So I can decide when I read an incomimg message :)and could play a scene until the end...

It's been good enough for me, I usually use a chat tab that disables combat, NPC chat, and misc. I have another tab with all enabled, and one with only combat disabled. Sometimes I temporarily enable misc on that first one, and might temporarily disable emotes during a particularly "noisy" party.

But yeah, OP is right, other player status shouldn't be in the NPC chat window. The problem is of course that stuff you might want to see (like XP awards) is also under the misc filter.

Then that also turns off a bunch of information that is actually useful. I only want to eliminate constant player online/offline messages.
