Taming Question!

    So I finally tamed an animal and summoned it enough times to open up the ladder 5 skills. Now I was under the impression that once I opened up those skills they would go up as I was using the pet in combat. Turns out the skills only go up when I first summon the pet.

    Is this intended? Because at this rate it will take 5 years to max it out
