The Episode 1 Main Quest - The Path of Courage Complete Guide

    This guide will detail the exact steps needed to finish the Episode 1 Main Quest - The Path of Courage.

    Of note several changes were added and changed for this series of quests, this guide is now current with these changes and additions.

    There are already several other guide out there that also have this information already, but are now out of date. However I wanted a more story centric and a more fully documented and very clear step by step guide. Of which this guide will be.

    Before even attempting these series of quests, you will need to know that the areas you will be sent to, will start to go up in difficulty. There is also a quite difficult battle that you will need to be able to accomplish to proceed. Make sure your characters skills are adequately leveled up, and have some good equipment before proceeding...

    You can however, leave and return to an area that you are having difficulty with, and continue to level up your skills till they are adequate enough to handle the challenges within those areas.

    Lastly, none of the journal entries refer to the "Path Of Courage" in any way in the journal entries. The term "The Path of Courage" is just a term used by players and developers to describe all the related quests that you need to follow for this one portion of the Episode 1 Main Quest (The Episode 1 Main Quest has 4 parts that need to be completed: The Path of Love, The Path of Truth, The path of Courage and the Oracle Quests).

    This entire guide is ONLY for a player to play solo.

    You can complete this series of quests in several ways. I will try to do a more story centered and logic based walkthrough in this guide. You are however free to do this how you wish.

    The first step of the Episode 1 Main Quest - The Path of Courage, starts with the terrible aftermath of a battle...

    Part 1 - The Amulet

    Head to Highvale, which is located in the South Paladis region.

    The first time you enter this scene it will be the Battle of Highvale scene. After you exit it, it will then always be the regular Highvale scene. Enter the scene and be taken to the Battle of Highvale if you have never been here before.

    There is no map for this scene. On entering, you will see a Wounded Knight to the east of you. Go up and speak to them. They will immediately ask your name, click your name at the bottom left of the dialogue window. They will give you their name as Gawain. Click the amulet keyword. Receive the Leave Highvale, and Deliver Gawain's Amulet task and journal entry. Receive Gawain's Amulet of Testimony quest item. Click the Brigid and Resolute keywords. Click Goodbye.

    (Optional) Follow the path to the east till you see a person named Healer (he will however be named if you have met him before). Speak to them. They will give their name as Samael. Click the Battle, Elves then Gawain keywords. The dialogue window will soon close and you will now be escorting Samael. Receive Stay Close to Samael task and journal entry. Now just follow him back up the path you were and then he will stop next to Gawain. Stay near him and wait for the Stay Close to Samael task and journal entry to clear. Now go back and follow the path to the large gates.

    (Optional)
    At the large gates, turn west and see the top of a well there. Go there and speak to the Dying Knight. Speak to them. They give their name as Nena. Click a certain matter keyword. Receive Find word of Nena's Charges task and journal entry. Click Goodbye. Go up the stairs West then turn and head to the door to the North. Enter that building. Go up the stairs to the east and turn east to the first open room. See a piece of paper on the ground. Click and drag that letter onto your avatar. Receive A Note for Nena in Highvale quest item. Find Word of Nena's Charges task and journal entry clears. Receive Give note to Nena task and journal entry. Return back to Nena and speak to her. She will immediately ask for the A Note for Nena in Highvale quest item. Give that to her. Give note to Nena task and journal entry clears. Receive Deliver Nena's Amulet task and journal entry. Click goodbye.

    (Optional)
    To the south of Nena is a dead body by a fire. Click that body and take the Identification Papers: Tracy of Resolute quest item. Having this quest item will allow you to answer a guards question truthfully, or not.

    When ready, unlock the large gate by clicking on the Key Hole and wait for the key turn animation to finish. Then click on the Palisade Gate to open it. Get ready for battle. To the south east you will see a wagon. Fight your way to that wagon. Speak to the farmer and click Goodbye. Click on the Red Wagon. Leave Highvale task and journal entry clears.

    You will now be in Highvale Outskirts. Speak to the guard next to you as you arrive (or wait, he will then speak to you). Feel free to explore this are if you have not already. I have a complete guide for this area here.

    Turn west and follow the road to leave this scene. You will now be on the Overland Map. Turn north and look at the top of your screen and see a blue quest marker with a name of Resolute and a Task: Deliver Gawains Amulet (and Deliver Nena's Amulet if you did that optional quest). Go there and enter Resolute.

    After you enter, follow the road northwest to the closed gate. At the closed gate is a Knight of Norgard. Speak to them.

    Click the name and then open keywords. If you have the Optional Identification Papers: Tracy of Resolute quest item, Janet will ask if you are Tracy. Answer her truthfully or not. She will open the door. Click Goodbye and go through the now opened door. She will only ask the question for the Identification Papers: Tracy of Resolute quest item only one time.

    At the top of your screen in your compass you will see a blue marker with the name Knight-Captain of Norgard. Head to that person. They are in the nearby Bar. Go inside the tavern. To the east you will see a Knight-Captain of Norgard. Speak to them. Click name. They give their name as Brigid. Give them your name if you wish. Click outcast, cause, Grannus then Gawain keywords. She will ask for the Gawain's Amulet of Testimony quest item and give that to her. Click MAKE HIM HEAR keyword. Deliver Gawain's Amulet task and journal entry clears. Receive Hire a Boat in Harvest task and journal entry. Receive Brigid's Amulet of Testimony quest item. Click goodbye.

    Feel free to speak to the various NPC's in Resolute to do further side quests (like the optional Deliver Nena's Amulet quest), or continue on to our next location, the city of Harvest.

    Part 2 - Harvest

    Head out of Resolute and back to the Overland Map. We need to now head off to Harvest. If you need help finding Harvest use the https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/map/ to find where it is, or when on the overland map, look for the location in your map by scrolling the map around. You will see a marker on your map for Harvest on the map. Head there. And enter Harvest. As you get closer to Harvest, you will see a blue quest marker to it on your compass at the top of your screen.

    After you enter Harvest, follow the road east. At the top of your compass will be a small blue marker named Ferryman and Task: Hire a Boat in Harvest. Head towards them.

    When you arrive at the Ferryman speak to him. He will give his name as Khary. Click the passage keyword, he will then ask you your name. Then click the prepared, yellow, kobold, war and then official business keywords. Then click An amulet for Grannus answer. Then passage and Yes, let's go keywords. Hire a Boat in Harvest task and journal entry clears. Arrive in Estgard.

    You will now have a new task and journal entry Convince Knight in Estgard. Head west and speak to any of the 2 Knight of Norgard by the door. They will immediately ask your name, give them your name. Click the aid key word. Convince Knight in Estgard task and journal entry clears. Receive Free Sir Patrick task and journal entry. Click Goodbye. Head back to the docks and then turn North. A ways off you will see a boat with a red sail. Go to it and click on it (Boat to Novia).

    The next steps from here will require you to fight a rather difficult battle. You can proceed or return here when you feel your skill levels are more adequate for this battle.

    Part 3 - Free Sir Patrick

    Once on the overland, turn north and head to the Kobold Expeditionary Camp scene near by. There is currently no POI marker for this scene in the compass or map. Enter the Kobold Expeditionary Camp.

    Make sure you do not have any AOE spells on your character, like Immolate. All of the creatures here are neutral and will not attack, unless attacked first. Follow the road till you come across some Kobolds and a round circular area. Follow the road north from there. Continue north until you see a cage with a Captive inside. Near the cage will be a Kobold Expedition Guard. Speak to them. Click the prisoner keyword. Receive Speak to Kormag task and journal entry. Click Goodbye. At the top of your compass is a blue marker named Kobold Commander. Go to them and speak to them.

    Click name keyword. They will give the name Commander Kormag. Click the Korabar, expedition, we did not start, and imprisoned. Click the Yes, I agree. Click Goodbye. Receive Earn Sir Patrick's Freedom task and journal entry. Now head back near the large circle area. Of note, pay attention to the various dialogue the kobolds say about humans as you walk through...

    BEFORE you even enter this arena circle make sure you are properly prepared for battle. You will face several waves of more and more increasingly difficult waves of creatures. Good luck!

    After you have defeated the last enemy, gather all the loot and make sure to remove any AOE spells like Immolate. Earn Sir Patrick's Freedom task and journal entry clears. Receive Free Sir Patric! task and journal entry. Now head back up the hill to the large prison you saw earlier. Of note, now pay attention to what the various kobolds now have to say....

    At the prison, speak to the Kobold Expedition Guard outside the Prison. Receive Kobold Cage Key quest item. Click Goodbye.

    Click on the Key Hole on the prison, and wait for the key turn animation to play and then the door will open. Immediately speak to the Captive inside. Both Free Sir Patrick tasks clear. Receive Speak with Lord Ferig task and journal entry. The captive will now run away.

    If for some reason you don't speak to the captive right away(?), go to the south east exit and go speak to him. He will be standing there.

    Exit the camp to the Overland Map.

    Part 4 - Ferig

    On the overland map, turn west and head towards Ferig's Battle Camp. No blue quest marker was showing for this scene on compass. Enter Ferig's Battle Camp. Turn east and follow the road to the camp. You may be attacked by wolves in here, so just be prepared. Enter the camp, and cross the small bridge and speak to the person named Lord.

    BUG: All of the Guards in this scene who say anything are displaying the completely wrong text and will claim the war is over and that Lord Ferig is now the King.....(68157).

    Speak with Lord Ferig task and journal entry clears. Receive Travel to Valhold task and journal entry. Click avatar keyword. Click the wine and And Talk more after? keywords for an optional side quest (once you finish the courage main quest, you can never get this quest from him, so do so now). Click Goodbye.

    If you got the optional side quest, just read the journal entry for Get Wine for Ferig and read the instructions in your journal.

    Exit out of Ferig's Battle Camp to the overland map.

    Part 5 - Valhold

    After arriving on the overland map, follow the road north to Valhold. No blue quest marker is on the compass for Valhold. Enter Valhold.

    In Valhold you will not have any quest markers directing you to Valhold Palace. Look at the map and make your way to the large castle at the north east corner. Do feel free on your way, to speak to any of the various NPC's here to hear what has happened. Eventually you will make your way to Valhold Palace. You will see two Knight's of Norgard at the entrance. Speak to the one of the left. Click name, they will give their name as Baldwin. Give them your name if you wish. Click the amulet and enter keyword. Click Goodbye. Click on the door labeled Enter Valhold Palace to enter.

    Continue north until you find a throne room. On a large throne you will see King of Norgard, Titan of Courage. Speak to them. Manually type the word amulet. Give them Brigid's Amulet of Testimony quest item. Click the activate keyword. A very long conversation will happen which you will need to scroll the dialogue window up to view all of it. Click the courage, titans, Earth, officer, avatar and Oracle keywords. Click Goodbye.

    Click and speak to Mara and click the ready keyword. You will now need to follow Mara and stand next to her until she says "I shall return to my father" then click and speak to her. Click the help, Conspiracy and stop him keywords. Speak to Mara task and journal entry clears. Receive Deliver Mara's warrant to Ferig task and journal entry. Receive Royal Warrant quest item. Click Goodbye.

    Head back to the Throne room and speak to High Chamberlain of Norgard. Click the ready keyword. You will now need to follow High Chamberlain of Norgard and stand next to him until hey says "I shall return to the king" and then click and speak to them. Click the Night of the Crystal Blades, forth baton and request keywords. Speak to Essen task clears. Receive Speak to Demig task and journal entry. Receive Royal Norgard Writ of Passage quest item. Receive Baton Headpiece quest item. Head out of Valhold Palace and back to the overland map.

    Part 6 - The Warrant and Demig

    When you are back on the overland map, turn west. Head towards Demig's Battle Camp and enter. No blue marker was present in compass.

    When you enter Demig's Battle Camp turn Northwest and see the blue compass marker labeled Knight-Commander of Norgard. Head towards that. Immediately a conversation will start with the Gatekeeper Knight of Norgard. He will ask for the Royal Norgard Writ of Passage. Give that to him and he will hand it back to you. Click Goodbye. Speak to the Knight-Commander of Norgard.

    He will give his name as Lord Demig. Give them your name if you wish. Click the mission, losing and one final matter keywords. He will ask for the Baton Headpiece quest item. Hand him that and he will give it back to you. Receive Enter Skrekk task and journal entry. Receive Diplomatic Note for Korabar quest item. Click Goodbye.

    Exit Demig's Battle Camp and go back to the Overland Map. Head back to Ferig's Battle Camp and enter it. Turn East and go back to Ferig and speak to them. Click the warrant keyword. Her will ask for the Royal Warrant quest item. Hand that to him. Deliver Mara's warrant to Ferig task and journal entry will clear. Click Goodbye.

    Exit Ferig's Battle Camp. Once on the overland map, turn west and in your compass you will see a marker labeled Skrekk. Head towards that.

    Part 7 - Caverns of Skrekk

    This next area can be very dangerous, so make sure you are fully prepared before you enter this scene.

    Enter Skrekk. There's several ways to go through this scene and feel free to try various ways toward your final goal, a door labeled Enter the Caverns of Skrekk. I will however post one of the ways in here. Head West and turn North to where you will see a cave entrance. Enter the cave and follow it to the end. You will encounter various Red Spiders along the way. BEFORE you go through the exit, I would stop, and make sure you are fully prepared. After you exit, there will be a door to the North. You just need to get and click on that door. Near the door will be various Kobolds. You can either kill all of them or just run and click on the door. The door is labeled Enter the Caverns of Skrekk. Click the door and enter Caverns of Skrekk.

    Of note, you are here now on an actual diplomatic mission. This is the only time you will not be attacked while in here. This area has no map. Look at your compass. You will see a blue marker labeled Kobold Guardian Task: Enter Skrekk. Go to the Kobold Guardian and speak to them. They will immediately ask for the Diplomatic Note for Korabar. Give that to them. Enter Skrekk task and journal entry clears. Receive Speak with Krishach task and journal entry.

    In your compass you will have a blue marker labeled Kobold Mystic Task: Speak with Krishach. Go to this person and speak to them. They will immediately ask for the Diplomatic Note for Korabar. Give that to them. Speak with Krishach task and journal entry clears. Krishach has a lot of lore information, feel free to ask him about any of the keywords he has (except escort). Click the escort keyword and then you can now follow him to the throne room or just walk there yourself. In your compass will be a blue compass marker Kobold King Task: Enter Skrekk. That is the next person you need to speak to.

    Speak to Kobold King. He will immediately ask for the Baton Piece. Give that to him. Click the rod, Grannus, weak, Demig and he must speak/time for him to speak keywords. Lord Demig will appear. Click the mark keyword.

    Move out of the way or you will probably be knocked down by the battle between a Kobold Champion and Lord Demig and then be in combat mode.

    Lord Demig will die. Of note, there's no marker, or any journal entry telling to what to do next. After he dies, speak to Korabar. Click the stupendous plan/plan, Mara, time/time for avatar to speak and go now keywords. Receive Return to Valhold Task and journal entry. Click Goodbye. You will now be teleported back to the Valhold throne room.

    Part 8 - Ending the War

    After you arrive in the throne room, wait a few moments and then Mara will speak to you. Click the I have news of Demig.... and Essen keywords. Essen will now enter the scene. Click the Demig has fallen!, fourth baton and dealings and Ferig keywords. Lord Ferig will appear. Click what needs to be done and move away from Lord Ferig and Mara. After Mara is killed, speak to Lord Ferig and click Goodbye. Go to Grannus and speak to him.

    Click Mara has betrayed Norgard, scepter, peril, courage, destiny keywords. You will receive the Scepter of Dread artifact. Click Goodbye. Leave Valhold Palace and then leave Norgard.

    And that is it! You have now completed the Path of Courage!

    Now that you have the Scepter of Dread artifact, go to any Oracle Confirmatory and speak to the Oracle. She will know you have the Scepter of Dread and hand you an item: Elixir of Dread. She will also tell you the words of power needed to activate the Scepter of Dread, when you have it equipped: Wast Ylem Gaus Jura Hex Exim Xen.

    You now can continue on to do the other 2 paths, if you have not done so already.

    It may be prudent to detail what the battle of highvale is before going there and how that relates to 'courage'? Perhaps its all obvious as a new player and the text beforehand but following the narratives in this game can be a bit tricky to remember.
