A theory I've been pondering

Theory: A player's real-life age and gender can be guessed with surprising accuracy by evaluating their Avatar's name.

After playing online for 20+ years I'm reasonably certain this is so. Folks born in certain eras, having peers of similar demographics will tend towards certain sobriquets favoring particular capitalization schemes, sexual innuendos, and sundry other clues. I've been thinking of developing this theory as an intellectual exercise.

And what's my age while you are at it?

 

Well...you capitalize the first letter only, which according to my theory puts you over 30. Your profile says male, so I'll go with that. And as you're in Sweden I'll guess that you work for the community as a teacher or as a private plumber.

OK I'm easy to guess (17 years old, female). But the OP is tough because SHE is Alexandra and HE is CornFELLOW. Hmmmm.

I'm gonna go with 36-year-old Norwegian chick 59-year-old dude. Am I right?

 

And what´s mine

 

I have an interesting observation myself.. every RPer who plays a male with green hair.. will be a vampire.. Similiarly.. any guy with a forum avatar with green hair.. (not skin.. but hair) is likely to be a PvPer. *nod* At least so far as I can figure these statements have been accurate in the past.

Yes I'm serious on both counts. People are weird.

Incidentally.. people have always had difficulty guessing my age.

You're a tough one Luca...first letter (only) caps...first and family names...grew up with StarWars...44, male? Either that or a classy 19 year old female.

 

False, i picked a name when games were invented and never changed it lol

My sister is always asked for an ID when she goes to a pub. I guess her avatar image and forum name make her look younger.

 

In EQ1, with the character name I used there, before TS/Mumble/Vent/RW were common, everyone guessed my gender incorrectly.

For north american/western european english speakers, names that start and with a vowel, or just end with a vowel, are more likely to be female. Similarly, names that start and end with, or just end with a consonant, are more likely to be male.

After EQ1, I was careful to only choose in-game names that reflected my own gender, regardless of the gender of my character. That way, when I did join them in voice chat, there were fewer surprises.
(Another consequence of MMO's is that I don't use my forum name, in-game, ever)

But just >30 seems like a too general guess. That could be anything from 31-131. We need something a little more specific.
