Perhaps Richard Garriott was watching Fantasia with his children recently. Lol. It will be interesting seeing the brooms of Brittannia. Lol that sounds so funny to me.

 

Hmm - anyone checked whether there is a potential copyright issue?

(don't want to be a downer - but I think a lawsuit with Disney is the last thing anyone wants)

 

I think the development team will guard against lawsuits and I don't think Disney holds rights on every single magical broom there is.

The broom of Britannia will be Britannia special. I'm sure the team will come up with a worthy magical broom for us. So far their imagination has been fantastic on most items.

 

If someone had a copyright on that, it would be the long-dead Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for his poem "Der Zauberlehrling", which translates to "The Sorcerer's Apptentice". Original German text and side-by-side English translation to be found here. Disney stole so many myths and folklore over the years, I doubt they will sue a small company that creates their own visual representation of one of the most well-known German poems.

Trivia for those into metal: December Flower made a very good song with the English translation of this poem as lyrics. To be found on youtube.

 

I worked with a jeweler who dealt w/ a lot of "imitation" designs; not counterfeits, but "similar but different" versions of popular jewelry designs. He would tell me that as long as there are at least four identifiable differences among the obvious features, we were safe.

Whether that above general advice is good or not or what any of us think doesn't matter; what matters is that Port has a lawyer to advise them on where the safe area is. This is not unfamiliar territory for Port; after all, EA owns the Ultima's and right to their use and this game has gone far in hugging the copyright lines w/ out infringing them.

 

can I do magic with my broom?

 

i went asleep while the telethon, was late here in germany and i was very excited this morning about his special reward.
I missed the virtue smole emotes last telethon, but to have a magic broom at home is just amazing

 

I wish the broom would behave like a butler, when placed in a home. So when their master/mistress is seated in one place for a few minutes, it might come and ask if they require a cup of tea, for example. Or a hot bath, if a hottub is in the house.

Or to behave like a less friendly housekeeper, scolding their master or mistress when they come home to take off their dirty boots, because the floors have just been swept clean. And randomly starting to sweep the floor.

Then again, such things might get annoying after a while, as much as they may be entertaining in the beginning. Perhaps broom behavior could be switched on and off. Just dreaming... There are certainly more important things to develop than a high-end AI for a broom.

That is what I am hoping for - that it requires effort or some kind to be effective at anything... Maybe too complex scripting for now, but in the future... giggity. You have to maintain a word of power chant or something or it does bad things...

 

I am hoping for the broom to be more than just an item that hangs around like the pledge servants and does little.

A flying broom as a mount (when the time comes for mounts) is one more rare mount in the game that I have never heard of in any other game. The wands in game are somewhat Harry Potterish so a flying broom would kind of complete the HP fantasy for some and would draw some to the game for that reason alone. This would be great.

If we had flying brooms quidditch games and tourneys would definitely happen.

 

You will most likely get your wish. I expect that it will be in actuality just another non-combat pet that will follow you around.
Hopefully no one is actually expecting more, and taking this thread as a bit of fun.

 

It would be amusing if it was just a broom with some glitter on the handle
