I recognize the song from my SCA days. The tune may be older but I knew it as a song about a love triangle between a king, his lady, and the fool. I had it on a tape by Master Iolo Fitzowen (aka Joe Bethancourt) but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the song, just snatches of lyric.

"The fool died in madness saying he was ensorceled, the queen only smiles him her sad, secret smile, and the king rules his people with wit and good humor..."

"and she's born him 5 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters, and they've grown straight and handsome, and sorcerers all. And they dance in the moonlight and sing in the springtime like a nightingale piping in a green forest hall."

Anyway, if anyone knows the name I would like to know.

You are correct on almost all points here. The one you've missed, though, is that whilst Joe Bethancourt did record it, Joe and Iolo are not the same person. Iolo fitz Owen is mundanely known as David Watson.

That said, you're right. It's an absolute classic.
