Well, according to the Tower quest, some "speak" in Runic, but that may be "Obsidian". Would undead have a language beyond whatever culture they were a part of?

Its been awhile but did the liches in the Necropolis speak in a language, it could have been runic, but we needed a spirit guide to decipher them right? I would love to figure it out :)

Right, it was in Necropolis not Tower. The text was placeholder, so it was in English but was supposed to be runic. The spirit guides did the translating. I'm still not sure it was meant to be because they were dead, or because it was Obsidian (or some other equally old tongue).

So @Browncoat Jayson , Runic can also be a spoken language? Or is it just text that we decipher. That is interesting to me.

That seemed to be the indication we were getting in Necropolis. I don't know how this would work, since Runic is just a letter substitution for English. I'd love to know what that speech represented.

The skeletons could speak in Morse Code, or maybe Binary.

Recently undead speak in Common when they bother to.

The centuries-past dead of the Necropolis speak in an elder tongue unintelligible to many. Students of old manuscripts may be able to deciper fragments of their speech.

    (ooc version:

The undead of Necropolis and similar haunts will have speech that appears in Runic, as a way of distinguishing them and with fun easter eggs if you the player can actually read Runic.)

If the undead are sentient, they would traditionally speak whichever languages they knew when alive. (I know, its crazy) this would ofcourse depend on where and when they once lived I should think. Re-animation should not change this unless their animator/creator taught them these new languages.

Which aligns with what Lum said. More recent undead would speak Common and older undead speak an older language represented with Runic.

This raises an interesting question about the concept of an afterlife. How would I communicate with Marcus Aurelius if I were to get hit by a bus tomorrow? Would he now know English because he has an abundance of spare time and is cool like that? Or would I be speaking a universal language of the dead...

Would be interesting to read any philosophy on the matter if anyone would care to link me in on that.

This would depend on how you were brought back. The idea of undeath is that your soul and/or consciousness has been reacquainted with your (or someone elses) body via magic or ritual. Where this differs is Vamperism and other forms of undeath caused by a virus. Diseased forms of undeath seem to spawn undead more animalistic than anything else apart from the forms I have already mentioned. Well, in regards to all the lore I've read anyways. Movies and shows make it convenient for interactions between people of different times and nationalities speaking languages they both can understand. But you get the idea I think.

I actually had a ROFL experience when I did the Necropolis with the "Spirit Talker" along. Many of my friends did not pay attention to the difference between what the Lich was saying and what the translator was saying he was saying. Two thumbs up!!!

I actually played a MUD called Darkness Falls. years and years ago it was part of an online gaming company. I played a female Zombie named Monasded. Darkness falls was a game where the creatures were the hunted victims and the people were the threat. Each creature had certain kinds of advantages and I selected a Zombie character, not the most powerful but due to their resilience against poisons, stuns, influence and blunt damage. Was great fun! Also with that gaming company was Rolemaster Magestorm and Aliens Online where you could play the marines or the aliens, even a queen. Fun times!
