That concept belongs to Batlin and the The Fellowship.

    Very very nicely done.

But as tech demo, largely irrelevant as most other tech savvy posters already noted: pre-baking is the key, and we can pre-bake almost nothing. :(

Also, try and view it *without* sound, and see how different the immersion experience is.

Pre-baking is the key for performance, but when people insist that Unity is a terrible engine made for crap mobile games, I think they are not being fair. Unity is a capable engine if you give it good assets and use it properly.

For an mmo, I think SotA looks pretty damn good.

The game has come a long way visually. Overall I like most of the style.

There are some plant/grass models/textures that still stick out, and they desperately need a bunch of clothing models/textures. But the game is starting to develop a really nice overall aesthetic.

And I love, love, love the style of the overworld map. I'm so glad we didn't end up with the paper map.

If you want to have a fast glimpse into how a 'mini movie' and an actual 'game world' set-up differ fro Unity, I'd recommend playing around with the Blacksmith-Environment and watching the live training session. And that is but the basic, these's so much more (already noted in this thread).

We get always to a point where ppl find delight in graphic. Guys, that is nice - yeah - but the problem is the game-engine and the design-decisions. I've played worse dungeon-hacks and had more fun. Right now it's an endless grinding for skill-points and money. Sure the sunset is cool but this will not keep players in the game. There has to be a more complex game-mechanic, a bunch of rumors, a motherload of events and a big amount of players to get some life into it. After that we can talk about improving the graphic. IMHO:

Great clip, but in now way a truthful representation of how capable is Unity in MMO games. Unity is quite cheap, but I am not sure is the good engine for an MMO game. There is also a game called Pantheon, it uses Unity as well and it has a lot bigger areas than what we enter to from the "lobby" of an overland map in SOTA. But then again, there are different constraints for different dev teams. And also Richard Garriot is saving money for s second space trip ... J/K

Pantheon released a bunch of 4K screenshots today, showing off more of Unity's potential. Wish we had high performing big zones like this in Shroud.

It's not really about graphics, it's about the scale. Areas in SOTA are quite small, comparing to what is being discussed in this thread.

Unity's one of the most flexible and reliable engines I've ever worked on. So no, Unity's far from being "the problem".

Unity is awesome! I was at a Unity presentation last month at GDC and came away more excited for the engine and future games than I've ever been for past games. This is the era of indie games, even with many AAA type games ballooning in budgets on the other hand.
