Having actively play tested this game for the last two years my muscle and nerve paths are condition to move and function in this game in a rather ingrained manner, Free attack is useful in many situations, but when I go into combat I often need to move instantly. Anything but moving with both mouse buttons feels unnatural to me and is not instinctive. While I have Toggle Attack secondarily mapped to mouse button 3 and entering combat is a simple two step process, it is not that instinctive. Often however in an instant response situation I end up swinging my sword instead of moving. I see no good reason why we should not be able to stay in the attack mode of our choice. In past releases this was not an issue and players were content with the way it worked.

I'm bumbling at the best of times but these recent changes in combat have made me feel like a complete klutz.

In the heat of battle, keeping an eye on enemies, friends and one's glyphs, the auto-attack toggle can be difficult to catch sometimes.

Maybe a small visual indicator (optional of course) for whether auto-attack is on or off would solve this problem?
At least during the learning curve. I can only imagine how confusing it is for some of our new players.

Problem is, "on" means, "only on right now" o_O

The default should not be "it's off again"

Yeah, I mean, sheathing your weapon should stop you attacking because you're not in combat, not toggle your combat preference.

Possibly this is done to prevent "friendly fire" in PVP?

It's sort of like when you have two switches to the same light in a hallway, so up ends up being off and down is on. Except in that case you can tell if the light is on or not, before you fall down the stairs.

I need it right now because of the mouselook issues in cursor mode that are being ignored by the devs.

    [edit] Fixed in 453.

If you're still struggling to understand, I doubt there's anything we can say that will satisfy you.

This has been discussed to death already and, at this point, you're just trying to start something.

The horse may be dead but this issue will not die. I will not relent.
However, I do offer a solution.
The main issue is those of us who strongly prefer using the right mouse key to look around and hold down both the right and left mouse keys to move do not like suddenly not being able to move when we unsheathe our weapons.
So give us the option to set pressing the mouse wheel the free attack key and leave the left mouse for double clicking on things, moving, and initiating auto attack.
    Problem solved.

What I've done is, when mapping keys to sheath/unsheath a weapon (as you've mentioned you did on your mouse), put a small delay in after that key, and then enable the autoattack, so one button press does unsheath and autoattack on.. your mouse mapping software should allow you to do this.

On the other hand, I'd like to see autoattack stay on when set to on, and left on.. between sheathing and scene changes.

+1 on this, I find it very tedious constantly hitting T after I sheathe my weapon or leave a scene to re-enable auto attack. If I want auto attack on let me keep it on!

I've heard that the auto-attack always needing to be turned on with a key is to stop botting. I don't know how accurate that information is, but from my point of view if it didn't switch us automatically to combat mode when attacked (something I've asked for several times) then it wouldn't be necessary to bork auto-attack like this.

I'm soooo tired of having to hit T after I draw my weapon because you default back to freaking free attack every single time you sheath them.

Do you have "use free attack" unchecked in game options? Auto attack is always active for me, including when changing scenes and when sheathing/unsheathing.

I do have it unchecked and it may be a bug but when you sheath your weapons and redraw them, you won't auto attack, it forces you to enable it again with T... every... single... time.

I'll bug it when I get home tonight and see what they say.

Either I am having Deja Vu or I think I had this issue before the reticle. I could have sworn I have seen a comment similar to Grave's above, and I responded with the following comment:

Wait, when in Auto attack, I have to press the T button to actually swing. Explains why I keep dying.

    Found it.

From R22 Auto Attack on sept 3, 2015.

"Wait a minute. You have to press 't' to enter auto attack. That explains a lot now. I was relying on the cards to kill things. I probably wouldn't have died as much."
