I'm not sure where to post this so if it needs to be moved let me know or go ahead and move it.

So, I noticed the last couple of days I've been getting a kind of stuttering or a pause every five seconds or so in the game. On a hunch I checked my internet speed with Speedtest to the Xfinity server. Without SotA running I get my typical 1.3GB download and 40'ish MB uploads but with SotA running I get in the mid-300MB to low 400MB downloads and around the same uploads of 40'ish MBs.

It is slightly better if I don't run it through Steam, download averages around 510MBs; still far from optimal.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

    With SotA running:

hitching in game is generally due to graphics processing, not connection speed. i see no more or less hitching on fiber than i did on dsl. most players are cpu-bound.

I'll check graphics settings, turn them down a bit to see if it helps. Why the speed loss though?

Hasn´t the transatlantic connection between the US and the EU problems since a few weeks? My game is lagging more than last month and I do not download updates in the background with Steam.

the game files are distributed p2p, at least through the standalone launcher. there's a checkbox in the launcher settings to disable that. i'm not familiar with steam, though, and since you said it was only slightly better with steam that's not likely to be a major culprit.

the OP is not transatlantic, though, they're right across the river from me.

The download speed thing is really weird - between the family here we have 5 accounts running right now on separate PCs all on the same LAN and speed test is within 4 Mbps of the max line speed

Changed display settings to various configurations down to lowest possible with no difference to hitching.

Does shroud take advantage of multiple CPU cores? Should it be set to use a specific core?

unity is pretty bad about multithreading. i think it does a little, but not much.

Seems to pretty much use one core most of the time:

I don't get that hitching you do - combined with the speed issue it sounds like something else is running in the background - have you tried looking in task manager / processes / sorted by Network to see what is being used by what?

I'm not seeing anything unusual running in the background and nothing that is using bandwidth over .1Mbps

What is the CPU Usage tool you're using?

Curiouser and curiouser - if the bandwidth isn't being used where is it going lol?

(the gadget is the old All CPU gadget from the windows 8 gadget pack - still possible to run it under Windows 11)

There are generally two things that cause hitching. The first is when assets are copied to the GPU. This happens on the same thread that the graphics are processed (or at least partly) and causes an interruption. This type of hitching mostly happens when you first enter a scene and can be really severe. The other type of hitching is due to the dotnet garbage collector. This will seem to happen randomly as you're moving through a scene. This type of hitch is pretty short but just enough to mess you up (I've fallen off bridges, failed to fully charge my buffs, stolen item, etc, all because of the garbage collector hitch).

Lag got worse during the day until the game lost connection with an [ALTAIR9000] error. I restarted, lowered graphical settings and deco distance and it works better, but still slower than last month and before.

Is perhaps just the server slow due to the holiday in the US and everyone playing there?

Hitching I am getting is every 5-8 seconds, lasts less than a second.

Yeah that's neither normal garbage collection nor networking issues - something else is going on here but at a loss as to the cause hehe

How much RAM and GPU memory do you have?
