Why do you find it "interesting"? Lot of people here keep wondering where instigation on these forums come from, I simply suggest they do a basic reading of that forum to understand. Just about every thread they are in here to instigate is linked there with their shocking comments. Go read it people.

I find it interesting because you say they are social engineers but you want the masses exposed to them. What if they start siding with them? You might enrich their ranks!

True, but so are some parts of the EULA and forum rules here...

It probably used to mean something at first, but possibly even the moderators have seen how hard it is to control only 2-3 stubborn people and lacked the energy because it was not really worth the fight.

Some things are always enforced more than others, but it still remains an open platform and moderators can change... even if highly unlikely, forums like that will always come and go and always existed since UO... people always ignored them... until now that is.

Lord British can also continue to ignore it and he is not alone or the first to use this "model" to develop social games... people are mainly up in arms because it was pitched to tease and supposedly sting the old fans, spiritual successor yadayada...

not not sting them on the forum built as a wasps nest... sting them in game, as in wake up the thrill, get the kicks.

Which obviously did not work because of the sheer amount of meta-gaming going around... can't ignore that truth, its absurdly unbalanced.

That is why Stundorn is all around the boards saying RPG this RPG that... it became RPG optional and the lore of the game does not align with the social interactions.

It's really that simple, with no alignment, there is no resonance and real chaos to enhance creativity and imagination, there is only problem solution... only control and release...

if I may borrow your verbiage @Stundorn :)

You are forgetting that just because someone doesn't play at the moment, doesn't mean they don't like the game or are unhappy with it. My brother is deep in Dungeons & Dragons Online atm. He still likes the game but some people play, see what a game has to offer and come back later when more content comes in. I certainly did in early stages. I'd do the Grand Tours and check out changes to combat, but there really wasn't much to the game before persistence. Even after persistence it was a bit bare. It's almost 2 completely different games between now and then, so yeah, some just wait a while. Then you have those that like to play other games or may not have the time at the moment to bother with games. You can't just say because all those accounts aren't active on a daily basis means they are unhappy or don't like the game. It's these generalizations the negativity promoters use to push their agenda, but then get upset when you "generalize" that's what the negativity promoters do because you're "generalizing" them. A bit hypocritical wouldn't you agree?

Actually Evadrepus used factual numbers and was not generalizing. You are generalizing and giving reasons for people not logging in. The facts are what she presents. The data.

That's not generalization either. Those are facts, whether you choose to believe them or not.
This is another good pointer as to why there will probably be no good, rational, and sensible debate as anything that counters a "belief" gets disregarded, no matter how true it is or factual. In this point, it's like it is inconceivable that players are simply "not playing" other than not liking the game. o_O

I disagree. You showed no tangible proof of statement. She did. I will admit the happy/unhappy is not proven, but the fact is that they are not playing for what ever reasons.

Really? Are you saying that there is no possibility of my statements? My brother, as well as another friend of mine just coming back to play, and my self as examples... you saying there is no possibility those are true? You saying they are lies? What, we need to have polygraphs, video-taped courtroom drama before it's accepted? As a lifelong gamer, these things are simply known as basic facts. People play multiple games and that just because they're not playing one at the time, it doesn't mean they dislike it. Hell, I've even bought games and never played them, either forgotten or busy doing other things. The fact that you think otherwise or that I need to "provide proof" of those statements and sentiments is just a "nail on the head" for my previous statement about having reasonable discussions and debates with those who perpetually promote negativity or back those that do. The fact that people would rather believe everyone who doesn't play right now just "dislikes" the game or is unhappy with it, is another solid point where people latch onto anything to promote further negativity about this game, even if provided with sensible counters to the logic, it's still refuted due to not aligning with their beliefs. It's one thing to be civil, another to be reasonable and use common sense, but it's something entirely different when all else is disregarded in favor of negativity or negative extremes.

Can you explain how asking you for facts to back up your statemtns is a "doom and gloom" perspective? In reality, I know (and anyone can look at the data themselves) that a small percentage of posts on this forum are negative. To me, it's "doom and gloom" to say that "every" post is "infected" with a "doom and gloom" perspective. I, for one, will stick up for the fact that this forum is an overwhelmingly positive place, which is good.

I am not saying there is no possibility its just not factual. No need for theatrics.

Likewise and it is a fact. I don't need to present proof that water is wet, that the air is breathable, or fire is hot either. They are known facts without having to present proof just as gamers, as well as reasonably rational people, know that just because someone isn't playing a game, doesn't automatically put them in the category of "disliking" or they are "unhappy" with that game... that there are other reasons as well.

Again, you are both right... lets take a true 3rd person logic :

1- When you pay to back a game (especially large amounts) and really like it, you will login and play that game.
2- The niche for Ultima/UO is 30-80 y-o... many of those people are retired, have disposable income and just wanted to support portalarium, fellow nerds, as a thank you for past glory and possible bright future.

If we substract those viewpoints, we are left with the fact that obviously a lot of people that put the massive amounts of money it took to reach such a high funding with merely 50 thousand accounts, were in the category of disposable income, or had a vested interest in putting those amounts on the table (RMT, fame ; but also generosity and gratitude).

So you are both right, there also exist people who would have played more, but are faced with the fact that its a hybrid.

It's not bad, its not good, and that might be an issue... because the infamous trammel feluca split caused much more collateral damage than was realized at first. It cindered and opposed factions within themselves, to the point where they became confused as to their own identity. Meanwhile emotions of jealousy were boiling in the blood of those who remained renegades, almost exiles in feluca.

The promise of lord British for a spiritual successor attracted almost all people who have that anti-PK spark in their eye, but only a few of the PKs because of the chosen ruleset.

I know some of you think many ultima fans never heard about SOTA, while this is true, all those who have that spark from UO have heard one way or the other about this pet project.

It seems to me like our friendly devs @ Portalarium have underestimated the depth of response they would get from this playerbase.

As you all know, I am a renegade seer and my speciality is multi-dimentional links.

I am throwing one out there as food for thought :

Back then in UO, it was a common thought among organized RMT rings, that conflict in the rawest sense wasn't good for business. Guild wars, factions sure... item insurance ? All too familiar...

It's logical when you think about it... but haven't we loved movies and books in which the message was exactly against that ? The matrix, fight club, men in black...

Wasn't Bilbo haunted by his own demons of lazyness and lack of imagination ? What was the moral in the simplest sense ?

Aren't our cult movies showing us that we shouldn't simply accept to be "mindless consumers" and look for conflict and friendly competition where its available ? Why do we have rules against bad attitude in sports ? The ancient greeks... plato, socrates...

    ...

So if conflict was pushed aside because it was good for business, then shouldn't we ask questions about the loyalty of the actors behind this organization ?

Shouldn't we at least think about ways to mitigate the collateral damage ?

That is where the "criticism" on the game gets blurry...

It's hard to distinguish intentions because people haven't yet come to terms with this trauma, this reversal of Bilbo Baggins on his head and the opening of online casinos where you spin a slot and bilbo gets showered in gold while making questionable sounds (true story).

It's also pervasive, so its easy for our devs and supporters to feel attacked by such a big questioning, it seems aggressive, it seems intentionally disruptive.

But it isn't : it's the cry from the heart of the roleplayers, however nerdy that might sound, its the truth.

And the solution isn't as complex and mysterious as it might seem...

Honoring the legends which we drew inspiration from, REALLY honoring them, not roleplaying that we honor them for the show.

Your old vets need their siege, my liege.

By keeping them busy, you offer them relief.

    It's a miracle.
