I haven't heard anything about how dying is going to be handled...Do you become a ghost and have to find a healer NPC or a healer friend? Do you have to find your bones to get your stuff back?

You haven't heard anything, because nothing has been said.

I get the impression (could be totally wrong of course) that it is pretty heavily contested and hasn't been 100% decided on even within the team. Just the vibe I get from the nature in which the subject has been skirted.

All in good time, all in good time... Remember, nobody gets out alive! So we will all be meeting death soon enough.

This could very well be one of those things that won't be completely finalized until some point in beta.. however, it could also be very well the case that the reason we haven't heard anything is because it would be very difficult to explain the details without giving away lore that they aren't prepared to let out yet.
We must remember that "death" is a major part of the world lore and it's something that TH will be explaining in the novel. I'm pretty sure they've actually worked out the lore behind it and they don't want to give that away just yet. The mechanics may be a different story again.. something that will need to be tweaked and balanced probably well into beta.

Im sure they could share a lot more with us, Any major Game Design company will have set up someone as a top Pledger to see what RG is about to do.
And I would say he may have at some point upset someone in the industry that is probably how ended up with a game breaking change to allow a player to own multi Plots sold in a shop, when housing & crafting are big selling points for the sandbox game. I've never seen this in any game I have played online. and thats alot of games.

We probably won't see it in action until Alpha r4 in March.

Yeah, I assume they'll internally be thinking of a knob to turn up or down the death penalties.

I assume they'll be pretty mild. Harsh death penalties are a big reason people quit mgames. They have an hour or two. They want to make some kind of progress. And this all gets wipes out by harsh penalties.

I know at least one of the Ultima games turned up the death penalties based on your bad karma.

I'm sure they've already figured out the lore behind death, but are debating how to handle it in the game, especially how it affects PvP. As such, it's probably going to be one of the last things they reveal, if at all.

I actually hope they don't spill the beans on this and force us in real-time, as we perform that murder or die to a rat or whatever, to face our actions that led up to our death. I'm hoping that death is not the same for everyone in all situations.

hmm interesting concept if death is handled differently based on your actions.. but I imagine though could get complicated in a hurry.

You're probably right, but it seems with this Oracle character and whatnot, that the game is constanlty watching us. It will know if we've lied or stole or worse, murdered. But how well will it know the context that led to that action? Based on what Richard was saying in the latest Hangout with the Dragons, it seems they just might -- at least on quest chains anyhow. Doubt they will know context on just free form open play.

Hopefully we can take nose dives from our tall buildings during test and see what happens :)

No combat until release 4 in March 2014 so they have quite a while until they have to figure that out.

Exactly! They want us to test, I like to push all boundaries, even if DEATH hasn't been well-defined :)

Like getting your $250 spaceship blown up in Star Citizen... if you didn't pay your insurance bill, guess what?

Your ship is gone forever. $250 down the drain!

Personally, I'm all in favor of game mechanics that DON'T punish people for playing. ;)

There should be a sense of risk, but games should be fun above all.

It's tough to balance, but I trust RG and co. to get it right.
