So I've been watching a lot of the videos about SotA and every player house I've seen has bookcases filled with books in it. From what I watched, it seems like people will just be able to craft bookcases and books and just dump them eveywhere in their house for decoration. Books are suppose to be filled with history and have stories. I was thinking it would add some depth to the game if you had each major dungeon/story quest give a book as a reward. Make books in the game kind of an achievement or trophy of sorts. It would give them value and also aleviate the need to have 15 mounted dragon heads and various other bosses bodyparts all over my walls. Instead I'd have 15 books on my bookcase to show off to my friends. This works for those massive bookcases in guild halls too. They could take down the big bosses/finish group content and show off the 1000 times they have completed it via book aquisition. Those mega bookcases ive seen in the guild halls hold their numerous books and this would give those cases value and prestige. In other games, I'd always collect stuff via achievements/trophies and they would just clutter up playerhouses and just end up shoved in a crate when I ran out of room. This idea could reduce item clutter in boxes and encorage people to get bigger houses for more bookcase space. For those who like the lore, the books could also have a indepth background story of the quest. I think this would encorage people to explore the whole game finding books to show off in their houses. It would also spark conversations about where to get certain books and the story of the game. For those who don't care about story/achievements, they dont have to partake and can still enjoy the content.

    Few other book ideas:

For bigger dungeons/harder challenging tasks: Have book volumes 1-10. Each one is aquired by doing a hard challenge such as not getting hit by falling debree by spider-boss-man, or making sure billygoat the escort takes no damage. "I see you completed the whole volume of Deadman's Trove on this bookcase! Thats impressive! I still need to do that! Can you help me?"

Sets of books: Once the complete book volume was aquired, it could piece together something to unlock a bonus area of the dungeon/game. Perhaps a spell/passphrase to type out in the game chat to unlock a passage door or even a detailed map to navigate a room where the wrong step will send you to your doom.

Exploration Books: You could have books scattered across remote sections of the land to encorage exploration. Bottom of a sunken ship, top of a waterfall, middle of a battlefield. Each book could tell the story of how it got there giving more depth and history to the story of the land. It would encorage exploration and make it more meaningful if you aquired something to read, learn about the game and show off in your house. This could get rid of that annoying ingame statistic telling me that I have 35% left of the world to boringly run around in to get 100%.

Completing a set bookcases (my favorite): Have a preassembled bookcase you could make/aquire. This bookcase could have a set position location on the shelf for every aquireable book for bosses, dungeons, etc. Once all books were gotten and filled in their appropriate place to complete the bookcase, you would get a reward. This would be like a trophy stand for your ingame achievements for your house. When complete, the bookcase could give off a glow/fire effect, give a boost to damage, or maybe even a portal to bonus dungeon/item, etc. What if a new expansion comes out? Just add in another preassembled expansion bookcase for players to complete.

Just figured those books in player houses could use some meaning in the game since they were so common and thought this would help. Cheers!

I would love any type of backstory or lore books. I really enjoyed reading those while playing Oblivion or Skyrim for example. And of course the older Ultima games had books too.

There's also the typical "skill" book that grants you 1 extra point to train up in some skill.

I like the idea of gaining a book for completed quests, but I think it would make more sense, if you took a half empty book with you to the dungeon, perhaps it's an old journal of a past explorer who provides background information that will prove useful while solving the quest. Then when it's completed, the book is full, showing that you recorded your own experience as you completed the quest.

Books should provide training for certain skills. So, if you obtain a book, it will increase your mastery of a particular skill.

I think books should be much more rare too. It should be impressive for a player to have a whole bookshelf of books, and it should be unusual. It should not be typical. Back in medieval times (not that we need to be historically accurate here, but nevertheless) books were quite rare.

Books could also provide information and history.

Maybe books should be able to teach rare skills that players CANNOT obtain without obtaining the book. Like a book that teaches a spell that could never be learned naturally, and the book is really really rare. Or a book that teaches a special crafting ability. Like in UO you had the glassblowing book, also sand mining and stone mining.

yes, I love the idea of rare craftable items, as long as they do not cause an imbalance in the game. But great idea Robby. :)
