I appear to have a skinning knife, but it's greyed out and I can't equip it... How do I skin and scalp things?

    Thanks!

You need to right click it and equip tool. It should be equiped by default but maybe you accidentally unequiped it.

You can skin only animals. Not humanoids.

As for the elf scalp quest one way to complete it is just to kill some evil elves and loot them by double clicking them, three of them should drop scalps. Should show yellow in inventory. Works only in the outskirts scene with the quest though.

    There is
In case someone doesn’t mind being spoiled, there’s also another way of getting an elf scalp without having to kill one. It involves you talking to the camp elf chief about your morbid mission and he will send you to another elf within the elf camp that will make you a fake elf scalp.

Hello and you cannot scalp things in this game atm but you never know about later. If your tool is grayed out it can mean it is broken or perhaps you have not trained or equipped as mentioned. You skin things, like bears, squirrels, rabbits, stags(deer), boars, wolves, alligators, and even dragons to name some. You don't drag your knife to the non combat bar in this game. You just need to right click it to equip. Then what I do is hover my mouse over the animal corpse and click the e key which is our action key. You can do this on any harvesting items like trees, reagents etc. Click on your k key then go to the skill and see if it shows your tool there. If you don't have a tool that doesn't break make sure you carry extras with you. I hope you have figured it out but we will continue to offer ideas anytime you need help @erlein

I can't remember if you start out pre-trained in skinning, but you might have found the problem. Press the K key and select the Crafting tab, then one of the top group of five is "Field Dressing". Click on that and the first one is the basic skinning skill. If it is greyed out, you will need to visit a crafting trainer. In many towns they are located near the crafting pavilion area.
