I don't think that is what the answer will be. What I think will likely happen (and what I would like to see happen) is that you will have some areas of the world that are at lest de-facto PVE so any one like me would be zapped to death by Tesla coils in pretty short order if I decided to show up there. I would like a large chunk of the world to operate under similar condition so that people who are extremely adverse to PvP can play comfortably and not feel like their experience is diminished.

On the other side I would like to see significant parts of the world that are open PvP no restriction where my and my ilk can blast each other to our hearts content. I would want similar conditions where I would be able to operate in my corner of the universe without feeling like my experience is being diminished.

I think there could also be neutral zones where we could still interact on a voluntary basis and come together for server events or anything else that we both might be interested in.

I think this would cover the desires at both ends of the spectrum if it were implemented this way. The PvP side would have their area to operate in and would have to accept a significant part of the world will not be joining us there but at the same time it wont be flaunted as such so it will go largely unnoticed. The PvE side would be able to do their activities without unwanted harassment they would know these PvP areas would exist but would not be worth entering because it not something they are interested in. But because the safety zone is much expanded they can advendure, farm, ect. and achieve their objectives. The reason UO did not work so well for a lot of the PvE crowd is that you had to leave town at some point as a practical matter and 90% of the world was a free for all.

What I mean is the game is still around but is merely a shell of what it used to be and its player base has largely abandoned it.

And what do you posit the reason for that?

That it was put in on life support years ago without further investments in new tech or modernization. As an analogy: Are you reading by candlelight or do you use a lamp?

I think I could fill a book with contributing factors.

Like what Mercyfyl Fate said UO is basically a vegetable on life support.

Because it lost its distinguishing features, and became a game which aped what a load of other games e.g. WoW do much better.

Oh we can have real threats of pain for players who try to be naughty and loot/kill another player. Just have everyone playing SotA required to be hooked up to a device that delivers electric shock to those who try to do anything naughty >=-P The game will check for proper connection of the device and there will be a web cam to make sure your wearing it.
Its really not all that crazy if you think about it, they got games you can buy at about any toystore that you play with a few other friends where you hear some sound effects and then a light flashes and when the light flashes you have to press a button right on time to avoid receiving and electric shock. The player who hits the button the slowest will get the shock.

And from what it sounds like from the PvP megapost, thats exactly what there going to do.. Theres going to be open PvP zones where people can blast each other to their heart's content. So basically theres going to be like "mini felucca's" all over the place. Like when there are areas of volcanic eruptions and stuff. There will be rare items and stuff their to compete for. There wont be "full loot" though, theres just a ransom system where a random item is chosen from the slayed player and the slayed player will get a message that his slayer will either take this item, or you can pay x amount of gold out of your bank to keep it.
It doesnt seem like much fun... i'd almost rather have random generated loot that isnt theirs at all so that I can actually double click on a dead body of the person I slayed and pilfer everything on it. Its just the thrill of standing by the player's corpse and removing all the items that are there after slaying thats fun for me.
They also say theres going to be rare "resources"? So im guessing there will be gatherers interested in going to these areas. My guess as of right now is that anyone who wants to be a prospector in those areas is going to have to be trained in fighting/magery and ready for battle.

I hear you. However I would still want death to sting. We really need to better understand how SotA will implement this. I personally don't like the concept of ransom looting.

Or be escorted. I have strong doubts that the lone wolf will have much success in those areas - especially during prime time.

"How to make world PvP ACTUALLY work for role-players?"

Answer: By giving them full freedom about pvp, freedom and sandbox = role-play. Restricting things will just break it.
