To be fair, crowfall is a dedicated pvp game.
I admit I am tempted to invest as well.
Oh and I admit if Port would do something like that I would invest for sure.

    Edit:
In the end it all comes down to if you want and can invest into venture capital or not.

Most of the reason I wouldn't make a profit-expecting investment rather than a personal values investment here is simply because the only product being offered is an MMO.

If this were a single player game or mobile app or even just had some side projects of smaller games and apps to help subsidize it, my assessment would be completely different, but MMOs on their own have some serious competitive disadvantages compared to other game types.

Even Sony divested itself of its MMO properties not all that long ago. Crowdfunding, or at least similar structures of close partnership and cooperation between developers and players where dividends are measured in satisfaction and experience rather than money. will probably be the best way for most to continue for a while.

I've invested in many games via Kickstarter, some 20+, and Crowfall is one of them! I look forward to it coming out. What's distressing is that they've already gone so far over budget and beyond their initial kickstarter that they need for money. I only hope that they can deliver on their original goal, and not end up shutting down before it's done due to cash reasons. But making games is expensive work, and crowd funding for this medium is still in it's infancy.

Lets make the premise that because Crowfalls parent company did something SOTA should do the same. **shakes head** If you want to invest in Portalarium throw your money away in the store with add on items. Could you imagine the chaos of a crowd funded game that the players actually have stock in? look at all the whining and grumbling here when no one has any stake other than trying to get a good game.

Smells of death throes over there at Crowfall.

    9.9m in funding.
    2014 Cash Burn - 1.375m
    2015 Cash Burn - 3.5m
    2014 & 2015 Cash Burn- 4.875m
    Cash at start of 2016 - 5m
2016 Cash Burn - Not stated but has to be at or greater than 2015.

Looks like the rounds of funding put way too high of a value on this and the investors are going to take a bath. I do like the concepts of the game and maybe they can sell off to a larger publisher.

The numbers they are throwing out are a total of crowd funding and venture capital.

We have never been told what Port has received in venture capital.

It's more like a bond than a share.
So the investors have 0 say.
But can you imagine the behavior ^^?
Just take a look at sota ;-)

It worked pretty good for the ppl that invested into wasteland 2.
But I admit that's really not the same as an mmo.

I would actually go further........the chances of ever seeing a return on an investment here is probably comparable to playing at a casino......in fact you will probably do better at the casino.

If a company is touting for real investors they need to make it attractive........I see nothing attractive about this in the slightest. Have to ask the question why the company is trying to raise money this way rather than go to finance houses.

What will end up an amazing deal for them will ultimately be a real crappy deal for the investor given the risk.

Because they ran out of idiots who would go along with inflated valuations?

Because venture capital is expensive and still hard to get since the **** hit the fan in 2009. Plus a lot of regulations because the **** hit the fan in 2009 ;-)

That would be my biggest concern. It seems too easy to take 1 million from little guys and give it to big guys using this model. Maybe I don't understand how that's not possible. But my gut tells me that even with the best intentions it seems possible this might be what ends up happening.

And I see no reason why they should. To date, I believe RG mentioned very casually that there were "investors" during a relatively early hangout a few years ago. That prompted me to ask where all the money was going, and did it ever go back to the investors? The answer has been consistently and emphatically "no". The money that we pledged has all gone towards Episode I. That may or may not be the case for Crowfall, I have no idea.

What's also interesting is that RG has at least once mentioned that he himself has invested money into this game. So yes, there seems to be an additional investment stream here, though I doubt it's worth talking about at this point. I think our contributions as fans are by and large what keeps the lights on. I believe the hard work being performed by the development team mirrors that. One can only hope it will be enough in the end. Regardless of the results I think everyone involved has their heart in the right place.

Yup so they screw the player with a carrot and stick of an "investment". Your investment would be safer within the Bank of Envy and you would see a better return :p

Ive never seen an empathic "no". Venture capitalists have no hearts. :) If they invested money and expected a return, they are going to get it. Anyway, its all speculation and we will never know. I suppose its none of our business anyway.

I have seen it many times on hang outs from both Starr and RG. All pledge money goes towards Episode I. Until they officially launch EP1, that's where all the money goes.

This is just me guessing, but I assume that once they launch EP1, "investors" will be first in line to get any profits. Then Portalarium will come back to the fan base, as well as other investors for a shot at EP2.

    Sounds logical doesn't it?

Yes, that could also be offered, sure.

And if they make a great game that brings in a ton of people at launch, it solves all the problems. The fans are happy, the investors are happy, anyone with stock is happy, and people are more likely to "support" or "invest" in EP2, which means everyone wins. Now we just have to make a great game. It's all that's ever mattered.

    Im envious of this statement.
not to derail this post but curious how active is PvP in Rats Nest, considering its the largest open PvP town or so it states, was just curious if there is any action there...
