Any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic... You of all people should know that, @Time Lord !

That's hardly a well reasoned scientific reason: Runescape sucks because only kids play it, therefore sota will suck if Chris copies it? That's a non-sequitur. Runescape had many adult players. In fact the 'best' players with high levels tended to be the over 30s age club. SotA does not insta-suck because it copies a single mechanic. The idea is prevent exploitation not appeal to kids. That's why your thought is wrong. ;-)

I see Chris has clarified. :)

@Chris any plans to increase PVP activity within the game from the dev side?

Pvp zones are empty and out of the way. Difficult to track down others and engage in this type of gaming.

It sounds like this is a good solution for combatting AFK experience gathering through use of pets (avatar sits on rock afk while pet kills all respawning mobs). I'm looking forward to reports on how the system works once it is implemented.

If you're sitting on a mountain playing with yourself, I DON'T WANT TO CATCH YOU! Some things can't be unseen...

So the way to macro skill-gain is to sit on a mountain playing with yourself while you let your pet kill mobs! *nods*

That's hilarious! I'd love to step it up but, as a stealth player, my kill-per-minute is rather low.

I would like to update this thread with the information that I was completely roflstomped yesterday by the #1 slot on the pvp rankings.

I fear this kind of strategy is a recipe for losing battle, resulting only in the the elimination of the simplest of scripts, and an "arms race" for ever more complex bots and ever more sophisticated detection mechanisms, until the detection mechanisms lose eventually.

What can be detected as a pattern (like mouse acceleration patterns) can also be recorded, imitated and modeled. There are several converging trends that will lead to ever more "human-like" bots, just to name a few of them:
    • AI competitions (many of which are directly game-related, and many where the results can be applied more or less directly to game bots, like driverless cars)
    • "legitimate" gaming bot research striving to imitate humans better (to improve game quality)
    • work in music to better imitate human-like instrument playing -- a drum machine is a simple but good example especially in this context because (I think) the analogy between imitating human mouse acceleration and keyboard press patterns and imitating "human-like" drumming is pretty obvious, and the research has been going on for a long time. And there are a lot more sophisticated things going on in that area.
Potentially the gravest weakness of such pattern recognition in an MMO game is when the game itself is forcing the player to behave like a bot. A bit like Twitter is making humans look more and more like bots. If the game is, by its choice of gameplay elements, encouraging robotic behaviour (or even making it mandatory in order to succeed), and presuming simple neuromotor pattern recognition systems are (or are going to be) trivial to fool, what distinguishing factors remain?

Therefore the only "sustainable" strategy would, I think, focus on making the gameplay elements themselves more human-like. It would also result in a better game as a side product.

Well said, and we are in a world of bots which cannot be escaped....

    ~Bots~
I am a person who plays allot, yet bot type actions are similar to what I do at times. I am not a tech savvy person, I'm on the low end of user mentality, yet I know what you mean.

I don't care about bots, because I do not know what could forever get rid of them, yet I play on!
    ~Time Lord~
