I love the idea of sport betting. It opens up all kinds of things... Horse racing, fishing tournaments, wrestling matches, and of course gladiator tournaments. Got a beef with your neighbor, duke it our at friday night fights with the whole world watching. Makes fun interesting game play..

It's awesome. But what if there are 100 towns and only 3 of them work like that? The other 97 become what, dead space?

That's a good idea. Fits really well with the casino, but that's a pretty big undertaking  Something worth considering, though ;) We will probably have an arena for gladiator tournaments in our metropolis :D

Not necessarily. Thats up to their council to decide. Maybe you specialize in some area on the skill tree. Mercenary, crafstman, farmer, dungeon crawlers, etc., etc. If player towns fail, that means they will be on sale for the next buyer, who will care about making it nice. And yes, there will be dead space towns, where people really don't want you there anyway(storage, hermits). So I think it will work out. I do agree that the land owners in New Britannia have a big responsibility to set the direction of the game.

Nobody take set the direction of this game the wrong way. What I mean is that the player towns need to be nice so that players enjoy SOTA.

Unique you ask. What will be unique will be those folks running and managing the player towns. I for one will be in a player town that is inhabited
by players in all time zones thus the town most likely have someone in the town at all times. I agree things will get old so new ideas will have to keep people flowing to the town.

Not to single you guys out Gabriel, but I think the Bear Tavern is probably the largest and most organized group that will own a player town thus far.

So my question is this...let's say you have a gladiator arena, maybe a museum, a few bars, player housing, a theater maybe? It's a metropolis! So you're going to have all that stuff and more.

Well the game is on 24/7 and you're only human so you can't be "alive" in both the real world and the SOTA world 24/7. Plus, your own players are going to want to explore and play the game outside of your town. So how in the world are you guys going to support a large town like that without it having massive time periods inbetween any planned events you might have?

Just take the gladiator arena idea for a moment. If I log on at 6am CST on a Monday morning, should I expect to see anything going on in this arena? I doubt it. In fact, I'll bet not much of anything goes on there 90% of the time. Sure, I have all the faith in the world in you guys to have some really cool events (maybe even on a weekly basis) but 24/7? No way.

That's why I keep asking the devs for more support on player towns...more "attractions" that draw players to these towns especially when most of the players that own the towns are off line or not at peak performance. I was very pleased to hear in the most recent developer hangout that they mentioned something about looking for more ways to support these towns, though I can't remember exactly what was said.

Well, the fact that half of our members live overseas in different time zones means that there will be likely be some citizens in the metropolis at all times o_O Quite a few of our members are dedicated to providing goods and services for both residents and visitors, so they will be a constant presence :D Obviously, we can't have special events going on constantly because of our commitments in the real world, but that will be true of any community...

Don't worry, if you stop by Beran's Reach, you certainly won't be bored :p

I see where you are coming from, and yes, people will gather to npc cities as a central locations. That's expected. But that is not where people live and know one another. Its like work vs. play. If you do it just right, people come to your city instead of Owl's Head. Just to support a player run city.

It's a very interesting topic and its making the noggin' turn. Thats a good thing. POT's have a solid uphill battle.

I don't think they need help - I imagine most people buy towns because they have a vision - and they want to realise it ... "if you build it they will come" sort of thing :]

(weird idea) what if tamers could tame chickens (wild chickens in hard to reach places) and they had a random speed stat - then you could have chicken races :]

Nice, our casino in UO had tamers go tame different animals, take bets, sick 'em on each other, and see who won.

Please note this was way back in the 90's, we would never fight any tamed animals in this day and age.

My thought is that the devs should create a random "attraction" system where a variety of NPC's move from player town to player town as a way to keep people from gathering in the same places all the time.

    Here are some examples:

    Various Traveling Merchants
    The Circus!
The Fighter's Guild: Lessons, Shows, and Mercenaries

I know it's overhead, but it's the type of thing that players can ask themselves "where's the Circus at today?" and then goto a town that they NEVER would've thought about going to before. It's like free advertisement for players that may not be as organized as a group like the Bear Tavern. I think this type of thing would give all player towns an opportunity to build awareness and attract people that might learn to appreciate what they have to offer, even when the circus isn't in town.

People who pledged early will get preference. As for anyone else, or getting the plot you really want, it's anybody's guess at this point.

Formulate your own opinions based on what SotA says about housing:

There will still be people allowed to place earlier than others (the higher level tier you backed, the more priority you will get).

"Houses will be fairly limited but more will be added over time as we grow the world"

    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/?p=5920

"Player housing will live in the persistent shared world, so real estate will have location value."

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/portalarium/shroud-of-the-avatar-forsaken-virtues-0

Now, if you look at the micro-transaction sections for each house for sale (in the add-on store), it says:

"There is only a finite amount of land in SotA, and the available property deeds are going fast."

Early on, RG said that housing would be "rare and limited" and that they expected all lot deeds to be sold prior to game launch. I've tried finding the link to those statements, but it takes time.
