I'm quite new to crafting and wanted to consult the local gurus before going over to the bug form to pound my chest and rub feces in my hair.

Making pulp from scrap seems to be bugged:

Firstly, it doesn't use the batching bonus, so, regardless of my batching bonus, I can only do 20 at a time.

Secondly, it doesn't seem to give skill gains to second-tier skills (efficiency and batching) as other scrap-to-refined skills out there.

Is this working properly or is it a bug?

Thank you for your help :)

the second and third tier refining skills only apply to recipes in the "refined materials" subsection of that tree's recipes. wood pulp is not in the "refined materials" subsection, it is in misc.

Thank you for the quick reply! I'm relieved that I don't need to go to the bug forum in order to bother the bug smashers.

But *isn't* it a refined material? Unless I'm mistaken, a refined material is produced at a workstation from raw materials - literally refined.

Pulp is refined from wood, is it not?

In addition, it uses the milling skill, which is a refining skill, and isn't a gathering skill.

    I apologize for the inquisition.

logically, yes, but the devs have shot down changing it several times.

I find that astonishing. What reason could they possibly have for excluding it, when other scrap-to-refined materials are, of course, refined. Is paper making such a delicately balanced economic factor that it requires an (incredibly inconvenient!) exception?

Regardless, as this is apparently an intentional design choice, I'll toss it into the Wishing well in the appropriate sub-forum.

    Thank you again @Alley Oop

EDIT: I've posted it for anyone who would like to add their opinion:

    FYI

You can check what is considered a refined material recipe by filtering on the drop down next to the search box, at least i think that where it is, not in game currently.

I agree though, pulp from wood or scrap should be categorised as a refined material

    Thanks for the tip @Spungwa.

Until this thread, I didn't even consider that a product of a refined skill wouldn't be considered a refined product.

I'll keep an eye on that in the future. In the meantime, are there any other refinement products that aren't considered to be refined products?

Pulp should be a byproduct when making almost anything on the milling or carpentry station.

However I assume that pulp is equal to saw dust. That which we use to make scrolls.

    Also.... ROFL!! Well said lol!

I think part of the reason they have decided not to include pulp from scrap as a "refined item" is because it's way too easy to get scrap as a resource and there is no fuel cost to the recipe. Therefore, it would be extremely cheap and too easy to include this product to level up refining skills.

Not saying I agree with it --- I think at minimum it should benefit from the increased batch size skill.

Wood pulp can also be gotten on the tailoring table from some (not all) of the books on shelves.
Do not steal them if red!
Unless, of course, you want your Truth virtue to be down.

Incredible! Does it require a recipe or is it just a mundane "salvage" ?

I've been destroyed countless books that I picked up in dungeons................

It is such a pain to make pulp for sheet music. However, the reaper trees like in ulfheim will drop pulp when you defeat them. It is one reason besides wanting a second cowbell that I continue to hunt these mobs .. for the bark and the pulp!

Not all books salvage - those that are highlighted when on tailoring station do - only one at a time if you have copies of the same book, otherwise the usual 15 limit applies.
