Something a little different from the last two threads.. This time was have a mock up simulation of the New Britannia solar system planetary orbits.. as they SHOULD be.

Keep in mind I didn't choose the orbital durations at random. The orbit times of all objects are as follows..

    Sun - 1 hour
    Daedelus - 2.5 hours
    Blue/Honesty - 2 hours
    Yellow/Compassion - 4 hours
    Red/Valor - 5 hours
    Green/Justice - 8 hours
    Orange/Sacrifice - 10 hours
    Purple/Honor - 16 hours
    White/Spirituality - 20 hours
    Black/Hunility - 25 hours

With the exception of Daedelus, all objects are on whole hours which is consistent with the current design. The times are the lowest whole numbers possible that go evenly into 800.. the known number of years between astronomical alignment.

In collecting my data for the 201 thread these orbital times are more or less within the same range as the sky at the time of this post. Note however that current day orbital time for Orange and Purple are 3 and 2 hours respectively despite occupying the 5th and 6th farthest orbits (not including Daedelus).

I MAY do a simulation with the current times for visual comparison later if the mood strikes.. also considering doing a more detailed 'as it should be' simulation with constellations and the works.. but for now I found this to be interesting.

Notice the frequency of planetary alignments consisting of 4 or more planets. Especially the 7 planet alignment which happens several times in a 1 year timeframe.

Great work. I love the model.

It would be really cool to:

-- Have a designated observatory type scene in game that attracted the community to meet for major alignments (though perhaps they should be off crafting instead?).

-- Have a little planetarium like this in a dungeon or tower as a place of study that reflects the actual heavens.

That is so pretty. I love the colors and the rotation form seems to be well placed. Great job!!;)

Are there any other good threads on this where one could maybe catch up a little bit on this aspect of the game?

Right here.. notice this is Astronomy "301".. there is also a 101 and 201 thread that are both recent.

I'm actually pondering the crazy notion of eventually turning this model into an orrey. Possibly to submit for EP2. I am aware of plans for at least two observatories being built in player owned towns. I would be surprised if Portalarium didn't build one for EP2 or EP3. The only truly rare alignment though is going to be the 800 year astronomical alignment which may, or may not even happen in-game. It would take 33+ real time years to occur. I suspect we'll see it once but that'll be it. It should be pretty big deal and I wouldn't expect it until after EP5 release. That is if my math is right. :)

Yes Memento Mori plans to have one of the highest observatories in the game. We are currently testing a few things and should have a working model in play prior to the January wipe. At Which time i will be glad to release to the public our wonder. Of course Bowen will get to see the test version of it to see if it fits his liking

Just double checking my numbers for the next simulation.. and I'll have to make at least one correction. Black's orbit should be 32.. in order to set the astronomical alignment at 800 years. At present, the determining orbit for the alignment is the #6, (Purple) which sets the alignment at every 400 years. So I guess we really do need a 32 hour orbit. Which would give a little room to play.

Other changes planned for the next simulation..

    Basic textures..
    Orbital paths will be visible..
The sun will be offset by 1/2 orbit so alignments will appear at midnight instead of noon
Orbit 7 will probably get the 25 hour orbit.. might also extend the others.. one of the faster orbital times and break up the frequency of alignments a bit. Will see what happens.

I still have my data on the way things are now so I might try to verify existing times for a comparison simulation. Maybe do a side by side or overlap?

Have you built the real time model yet so we can see them side by side (overlap I think could be too confusing).

No I'll get around to it eventually I'm sure.. but don't expect rapid fire updates.. it eats up a nice portion of my bandwidth to upload to youtube, and if I want it to be accurate I'll need to verify some data. Right now what I have is best guest for the following..

    Daedelus.. 6-7 hours
    Blue about 16 hours?
    Yellow more than 16 hours
    Red 12 hours?
    Green 8 Hours?
    Orange 3 hours - confirmed
    Purple 2 hours - confirmed
    White around 20 hours?
    Black 22+ hours.. probably 25?

As you can see in the current sky the order of orbital duration doesn't match up with orbital distance, but observing which planets pass behind which confirms the planet order. I could just go ahead with these numbers but I'd like it to be a little more nailed down first. Of course if anyone would like to help confirm or refine these numbers I'd appreciate it. :)

Feels weird that the sun moves so fast
Is you using a model where the sun is the middle or the planet is in the middle?
Is all planets in the same ecliptic plane like our solar system?
Rotations could possible be calculated relative the stars constellations

It's a geocentric system so a little weirdness can't be helped. Yes the planets and sun are all on the same plain.
