To fix the Arrow recipe, you really just need to fix Arrowheads. I'd make this suggestions:
    • Change the Arrowheads recipe from 1 Metal Ingot to 5 Metal Scrap.
This has a couple effects: It removes the fuel requirement for making arrowheads at the ingot level, which is most of the overhead. It also reduces the amount of "good" metal needed to make arrowheads (from 4 ore or 12 scrap+1 ore), while providing a direct use for all the rusty weapons you can get in newbie scenes.

Brilliant! That brings the cost down to .12 gold/arrow if scrap costs is 2g each. Still a bit higher than .08 that arrows cost from NPC's, but at least in the same ballpark now! Drop bundles of feathers to 2g instead of 4g and you've got .1 g/arrow, very close. You still won't make money selling them, but it would be totally worthwhile to use your own scraps. @DarkStarr this may be a solution.

While I like this idea a lot, there's significant complexity involved with adding a system to select what type of arrow you're using. I can understand why they're not in a hurry to change it.

[edit] Also, people should be careful how much they complain about this. Their solution might just be to significantly raise the price of arrows.

nahh .... supper simple ... If crafted arrow is present use crafted arrow ... if not regular arrow.

It's a simple If Than Else logic argument.

while you are looking at arrows also look at repair kits. These are pointless to make as well.

I could see this and we end up using those Hemlock borers and the others for different types of enchantments on the arrows.

I think there's a lot of untapped potential with arrows, really. Why not different recipes for different types of arrows, some can do more damage, some can have further range, some could light the target on fire....might be the balance to the lack of elemental bow enchants ie 'gust arrow' or 'tremor arrow' or (insert weapon gem enchant here - arrow) and the recipes could use gem fragments.

Found this thread when I just learned what a poor economic choice I made crafting arrows, and how much cheaper they are just to buy off NPC vendor.

Would absolutely love if crafted arrows gave bonuses based on materials used. I would love to switch my quiver loadout based on what I was fighting. Here’s to hoping that is in the works.

I've never heard anything from @DarkStarr or the other devs, but adjusting the recipe at least would be economically sound.

I think making them cost a couple gp less per 24 or whatever would make them not bad to craft for newbies who probably have the resources anyway. Eventually, the specialized arrows would raise the price a higher (depending on additional resources required) and allow those who are crafting those from scratch to make a little more money.

Geez, I've been playing this game for slow long and I never stopped to think about arrow crafting cost. I just was happy to get 500 arrows a crafting. That's years of wasted materials.

While i admit that changing things with crafting arrows has an ripple effect on economy i think somethaing has to be done.

Archery is as it is already boring enouogh.
If i make my own arrows skill should influence how many per batch i make and allows to come out even at 60 or so, that feels right, more so at higher carp skill.

Yes i know not newbie friendly, but aside from the ability to do an recipe with skill level X skill does not really has any point in crafting aside Masterwork or ench.

I want to really see/feel if i have an high skill in crafting after working hard to get there, right now it is all the same only with more expensive reagents.

I fully disagree. Also, I feel that I already have to do too much in order to get ready to go out and do a thing. Having more things that I would have to do before I could actually get to the adventuring part does not make the game more exciting; it makes it more tedious.

My thoughts on this would be to allow the NPC vendors to continue selling normal arrows and leave specialized arrow making to the new ammo system once it gets into the development stream

My concern about specialized arrows is that they will certainly provide some benefit and then ranged combat will need to be nerfed in order to "balance" it again, making specialized arrows a necessity, adding more tedious crap that must be done before any fun can be had.

    That.

While i am the opinion that archery is boring as it is my thought was not about adding special arrows.

Improving the skill tree, make specialisation count more for bows, Redefine skills, make Archery work better together with an improved light armor skill tree, make archery with more tactical choices.

That an arrow systhem would mean nerving bows to keep them balanced and therefore make archery just more expensive and grindy is a given.

That why i am very much against special ammo, it would only make archery worse as it is

So why not get rid of ammo altogether?
