If the Devs want me to learn runic they could do it easily.

Every loading screen is a chance to teach me runic.

A legend on the overland map would teach me runic.

A runic academy in every city for earthly avatars with runic to english conversion charts would teach me runic.

I'd buy these charts to put in my in game house so I learn runic when I go to my crafting tables or library.

I think the signs should be in Cyrillic, Tamil, or Japanese, to really challenge us.

I'm with Budner I would like the option to see them in English. There's nothing wrong with having options, give the option in the settings to see it in runic for those that want to and a box for me to check to see the signs and anything else in English. Why do people object to options so much, I'll never understand.

I wasn't objecting to options. I was objecting to the comparisons and excuses to justify making a change. There's nothing wrong with "I just want it this way" if that's what you really want.. Though I also do not see how just having signs in runic is a detriment. I get around just fine usually without even looking at them.

Excellent suggestion. That would also help deal with words that don't fit on the signs in every language.

It is irony, his sig says "lick me", aren't you glad it was in runic, and you didn't have to know what it said? ;-D seeing it in English just isn't the same...

Okay, I am not one who normally tries to bring the old Ultimas into our game because I'm a UO guy hehe...but honestly, I loved learning runic in the old days...Everything was in runic and no English translation...I already have my cheat sheet printed and ready to paste to the wall. This game will take me back to the days of old!

I absolutely agree with Lord Baldrith - to me the runic brings back many happy memories of wandering around in Old Britannia, playing the Ultima series. And, like any new language, repeated exposure breeds familiarity. I predict that it will not be long before we instinctively recognize the runic shapes, and can "read" the street signs instantly.

I once proposed a language skill that would allow the PC to translate. I'd still very much like to see that. It would allow an immersive means to give players the option of whether or not they want to see runic. Alas, I don't think we'll see any yet to be announced skills for EP1.

Runic is part of the game.

I'd keep them in runic - but only for me and who wants a tiny little more atmosphere. I learned this runic alphabet around 30 years ago (it was slightly different, tho), and I find it's very simple to read.

However, I wouldn't want to see it forced on anyone. At least, a toggle option, or localized (not just in english) tooltip. I'd rather lose a bit of immersion, if it gains the game more players.

About the cunning linguist who wants to be licked... I see what you did there. :p

Keep all signs runic because some idiot will eventually make a map with a translation.
    I bemoan the day.
By the way, where's your plot?

For me personally, I won't take the time to bother with street names if they are in runic.

There are somethings in life where I appreciate that level of immersion. This is not one of them. Same with reading the map. I'm not as young as I used to be and have little desire (and time) to be so immersed in a game that I can read the runic language.

I can appreciate the desire of some for having them in runic, but I personally enjoy the ease of language selection. We will have to see what the dev team comes up with. I'm sure, in the end, it will be something we all find useful.

Ever been to Scotland? Many signs there are written in Gaelic AND English. ;)
So why not do the same in Novia?I like the idea with the tooltips. Make the signs in Runic and tooltip in English, this would be the best compromise and it is also a great way to actually learn Runic!

    Greetings
