As it has been mentioned in another thread, Owl's Nest was nerfed and perhaps for the better.

As we're starting to focus on regional economies, we may to start looking at tiered mines.

There should be mines with better ores in more dangerous locations. The traditional mines should remain as mid-tier mines. But we also need a replacement for how Owl's Nest used to serve as the starter mine.

We should have starter mines near Solace Bridge, Highvale and Blood River, each with weak mobs and lower level ore deposits.

There are no "better" ores to mine unless you mean I can find tin and tungsten nodes.

They are all the same with exception of the result of the item you craft will have different bonus attributes. You can't really say Copper < Iron as one person may want one set of bonus's from the armor they wear and another person may want a different set of bonus's.

Regional economies isn't going to work when I can carry a stack of meteoric sheets from one side of the world to another in under an hour. If the world was bigger this would or could be possible but under present and near future stated plans this isn't going to change so regional economies will not occur... I wonder if the Dev's considered hiring someone with actual Economic experience... not just programmers and a book writer.

So as for OP... No such thing as "starter mines" because there is only 4 ores to mine, two of which are used in crafting armor and weapons the other have unique uses, gold for enchanting and silver for crafting taming necklaces. You need to either be escorted and protected by someone or wait until you have increased your combat skills to survive to mine gold or silver for use in other crafting. It's my third day and I can get to the end of Serpent mines and gather iron... I have little need for copper when I can make all the armor most people want with iron. (I sure hope there are a half dozen new ore types planned for sometime within the next year. Like Obsidian nodes.) I should be mining silver and gold next week at the rate it feels like I'm going. Wish I had to go on a quest or something to learn each of my gathering skills.

As for gems, same answer... there aren't high and low level gems, they all have unique results depending who wants them, casters fire/earth/Life etc., melee, archer.

There is also another issue with mining ores... ANYONE can do it, everyone starts with the ability to mine any of those 4 ores (same with all crafting resource gathering)... access to those ores is based on characters ability to fight the creatures around those ores. Creating mines with weaker creatures to mine the same ores as the harder to survive in mines would make the value of ores drop drastically. Why even bother training any other skill, make an alt that trains mining ore ONLY to master and ignoring all other skills of defense and attack. Save your main played character skill points to spend elsewhere. I'm disappointed we start with all the base skills the way we do, I'd like more say in where all the starter xp is spent. I wouldn't have put points in some base level resource gathering skills. (We're all Clones of the Avatar)

Frankly I doubt they will add "starter" (low level creatures around them) mines... they want to have regional economies... which won't happen as long as I can stock my high strength naked mule character with lots of ore of a particular type (Or any crafting resource) and recall or teleport to a friend. Regional Economies work in the real world because we don't have teleporting ability in the real world.

If people don't believe me go to a college and ask a panel of Economy Professors what would happen to regional economies if the world had teleporting... PLEASE video tape you asking and them answering then you-tube it for me... thanks. (Star Trek Earth's economy... oh wait, it doesn't have one.)

Ok I'm going to play some...

There are ore resource nodes that have very different rates of success. I assume the harder nodes have a greater chance of Tungsten, Tin, etc. or some benefit to offset the harder chance to mine them.
