You're unfamiliar with background material that is directly applicable the a discussion at hand.

Is SOTA made only for those who enjoyed that background material?

Cause if so then I think I want my money back.

    Straw Man, and hyperbolic.

You're simply not familiar with the motivations behind why some things are the way they are.

So what? That doesn't mean you can't offer a valid perspective on the issue. Limiting opinions to people who do is basically saying this game is only for Ultima fans.

I've never played an Ultima game but I like the overland map idea. But I can't contribute my opinion because I'm not familiar with the background source?

Please point to anywhere in this discourse to support any of the accusations herein leveled at me. All of them are you reading into my words something which is not there.

What's the point of telling someone they don't have familiarity with the source material if not to discredit their opinion?

Which is why I asked "so what?" You replied with "he doesn't have all of the information on hand relevant to this discussion." Okay, so that implies that you must have played the Ultima games to have that information and therefore to contribute to the conversation.

As you wish. You seem to be determined to cling to your misconception.

Well you are not exactly coming off as open to discussion...what I think he meant to say is you would understand better why fans want that map if you were familiar with the source material.

Why you don't want to be is beyond me though, ultima 7 is quite playable even today...and is an excellent game, you really are not doing yourself any favors.

Point of order, Rune_74. I believe Heradite supports the overland map.

He can explain what he meant if he wants. He decided to let me cling to my "misconception" so there's that.

I'm sorry if I came across as hostile.

Captain Jack was faced with quite a bit of this to start with also, what he means by 'this' is the aspect of older hard core ultima gamers telling him that he doesn't get it because he didn't play ultima. Well, Captain Jack took it upon himself to rectify that. From memory this is what Captain Jack remembers about the Maps.

    U1 - dual scale
    U2 - dual scale
    U3 - dual scale
    U4 - dual scale
    U5 - dual scale
    U6 - faked mono scale
    U7 - faked mono scale
    U8 - faked mono scale
U9 - most probably faked mono scale
    UO - mono scale

The dual scale maps or illusion of dual scale maps outweigh real mono scale maps in Ultima. A lot.

    Jack,

    How were they faked mono?

Faked mono, because when Captain Jack walked into some buildings and some caves/dungeons, he was warped to another part of the map. The loading time was very very quick, but you could tell you were being moved around. Captain Jack was seamlessly warped to different points on it when he went certain places, and doesn't consider that true mono. It is a neat trick though.

    Jack,

I think there were a few cases where that was true, but generally, wherever there was a dungeon, if you turned on the cheat mode, you could move the face of the mountainside, and walk right into the dungeon through the mountain. I know, I messed around plenty in cheat mode :D

Or at least thats what I remember :D The amount of 'instanced' dungeons could have been more than I remember.

Yes, that is true, smaller ones prob didn't require the map space to require it moving the player away from the map point where you enter it(Not U8 though). But. It did happen :) Captain Jack did want to point that out, and even if you count some of the faked mono like 6 and 7 as mono, well the history still shows the clear picture of dual scal maps being used.

That's how it was described to me. I like the idea of moving from hex to hex for similar biomes, very similar to what they do with dungeons. I would say, however, that once you hit the road or a city, pop it back up to overland map. :)

I hope that things can become more fluid like in terms of moving around. I like the overland map, and the idea of hex to hex movement(non-overland).

Chris did say that they're working on not unloading assets that might be shared by scenes, so they don't have to reloaded when they need to bring up a new scene. I think he also suggested at some point that not everything in a city scene was created at once, though I'm not sure.

The way I see it, the idea of traveling from scene to scene is a lot more complicated now that they dropped the model they had before, where every hex was represented by a scene.
