    As an MMO gamer for 17 years, the first time I heard them called "toons" was in World of Warcraft. It's fitting because they did look cartoonish.

    I recall a pen & paper role playing game from the mid '80's that used 'toon as the descriptor for individual characters, perhaps that's the genesis of the term? I think it may have been a Steve Jackson Games product.

    edit -- wikipedia confirms 'Toon as a SJG product from 1984
