Tricks and scams in the marketplace

No Leaderboard exists about Outlaws and Crimes or Scammers

Else you would see me reading it. Then we would start preparing to hunt them down and choping off there heads.

That would be fun!

Or i would have a Guard Station creating a daily news about illegal activity.

Or Avatar Radio having a Crime News of Britannia daily.

 

One of the few things this game really has an advantage over the rest of the market is the community. And I think most of the time, Portalarium does a good job fostering that. I'm glad they are taking a hard line stance against scams because I want this community to be welcoming to new players, especially since the rest of the game does not hand-hold.

 

Yes. I love them also. Hugs and Dance.

And because i do so i give them a honest opinion. With no honey in the bread.

And if they did do something awesome i also let them know it right away.

 

I usually agree with you Myrcello, but not in this case. Specifically subverting game mechanics and using them in a way they were not intended to trick unsuspecting users out of their hard earned gold is NOT roleplaying a scoundrel. It is exploiting.

If you chatted with a user and convinced them to enter a PvP zone and then robbed them blind, THAT would be roleplaying.

Kudos to @Berek and the team for shutting this down hard.

 

Suggestion to those of you with large friends lists in-game and/or large Guilds and associations/alliances:

There are a lot of Avatars in many countries playing this game, and English is not the Native language for some...as easy as this scam can be done to those who speak/read English, imagine the frustration level for someone for whom English is a 2nd language -- if you know helpful Avatars who can write these warnings about these scams, in a few of the other languages used by some other parts of our community, it would be a helpful thing. If it saves one person from being scammed out of a large amount of Gold it would be worth the few minutes it would take for the warnings to be translated.

I am a dummy and only speak/write the one language...but any who could help would be appreciated by those reading the warnings in their native languages, I'm sure. Just my opinion.

I crafted the bag, sold the bag as a bag, the bag was bought, renamed, and resold...

So... Whose getting banned here? The crafter, the seller, or both?

 

Very Vocal ZVery upset got it but you also know full well this was done directly to deceive players into think they where guying As the founder Artisan Tool, true when you get to eh nitty gritty iit is not it but close enough to be considere Deliberate mean to deceive.

Sadest thing is YOU KONW it, you have seen it , we have all seen it, and in the first week of vliable market play it started. Good thik they are cutting ghte head off now, trying to defend it is abusurd.

With the way it is displayed, I would have bought it without looking at the item details. Good thing I have less than 600g right now.

 

While I do Understand and KNOW what @Berek is getting to. I'm merely trying to point out that you can't just jump don't peoples throats for this stuff.

The FOUNDATIONS of many a many of these games is based on mechanics like this and what folks can do with them.

Understand that this is a mechanic of the game that was asked for and put in place and now we are threatening to ban people for getting creative with it.
WE KNEW this was coming. We planned for this to be coming and now that it's here everyone's like Oh NO! Wait... Stop everything.

Personally i'd like to hear what LB's thoughts on said mechanics are and the "Virtues" of using them in said fashion. But that's just me

You can't tell folks here is a cool game mechanic but you cant do X <see list attached of 3,000,000 things you can't or should not do> with it.

And you name just ONE society based on capitalism, and by definition; that's what this game is based on, ever had a good and fair market system...

There isn't one, and anybody that thinks any different, probably smoking something that they shouldn't be...

 

Port should have server logs for the whole process and should be able to tell who the scammer is.

And there have been multiple examples from the same player repeatedly without Port taking action yet.

So I don't think they've gone too far. Last I saw (about or two hours or so back) the player was still pulling the same scams.

So you're accusing Port of too quickly and unfairly dropping a ban hammer, when they've done nothing so far that anyone can tell.

 

That's a stellar idea, I like the idea of a "news episode" 1/2 hour set once a week detailing the previous weeks in game highs and lows. Could be a show there!

 

And again that's understood and he's using an in game mechanic hoping someones gonna come along and buy it without reading it.

What this whole thing amounts to is:

Somebody ran up on a vendor, saw a bag on it that they thought was a pricing typo, and in their excitement, didn't bother to read the small print, and then went and cried their precious little eyes out because they spent their last little bit of gold trying to take advantage of, what they thought, was somebody else's misfortune...

Scammers are going to run rampant in this game folks, so get used to it and get wise...

UO was all about using items the way the are not intended.

The hole rare item market.
The hole decoration System.

Runes - Stealing them - remarking them - placing them back into the owners bag.
Yes -i landed on a abandid Iland - but i laughed hard.

But ok,ok - renaming Bags is too dangerous in a vendor.
I missunderstood the danger.

You all convinced me.

It is a Game afterall.

But bare in mind that there was once a situation they did add a magic lock my property function to the game letting us run into magic walls.
To protect us players.

I started a crazy thread apposing this idea causing heavy discussions.


At the end i am happy they are gone.



And refining how this renaming works making it impossible to scam i still consider better way to go.

Port already said this is a bannable offense and against their terms.

It is exploiting new players and harm.

And we have a ONBE member defending fraud and exploiting new players.

 

Fraud is generally illegal in any market system, unfortunately there Isn't a in-game tool to punish it yet. And for a game that has clearly drawn a line to prevent griefing of any sort, they only options they are going to draconian in nature.
