One of the best sayings I've heard is, "You don't stop having fun because you grow old, you grow old because you stop having fun." Who cares if that fun takes the form of enjoying computer games when other people think you ought to be knitting blankets or tending the roses 'at your age'? :) And it's definitely high time people stopped treating female gamers as some sort of rare breed, there are plenty of us about these days!

I'm old enough to remember the Amiga vs. Atari 'war' - we were on the Atari side, and one of the Ultima games back in the late 80s was how my husband got me into gaming when I was stuck at home and a bit depressed. Our son got his first PC games when he was 18 months old and learned to use a mouse very quickly - these days you can't keep him away from a computer. ;)

Thanks everyone for your nice words - I don't feel quite so silly now lol. Roger36, yes my first 'computer' was indeed a ZX81. I gave it away, but rather regret doing that now.

Karrolanth, I love that saying "You don't stop having fun because you grow old, you grow old because you stop having fun". I think I'm going to print it out and stick it above my computer desk when I move house, hopefully later this month if all goes according to plan. I do wish my husband had enjoyed gaming but, on the other hand, at least I got to keep the computer all to myself - until he discovered eBay; then it was a slightly different story! :(

Iona, you are an inspiration. There are obviously many of us *cough* over uhhh let's say 25 now and it is great to see someone even more over 25 still playing. But, truth be told, one of the fiercest guilds I have ever run into, one that harvested by the ton, crafted awesome stuff and showed it off very well in PvE was different than what I expected to find. We all knew they had great communication, worked as a team and genuinely cared about each other. One day, one of their high officers admitted to me why they worked together so well. They were all in a retirement home together! A couple dozen of them had taken to gaming as way to stay mentally active. The youngest was 68. They were incredible, and the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. I'm glad you are here.

And Timelord, still loving this thread! Thanks.

    Hi,
I met players in Ultima Online in a similar age as you - and these where some of the best and most reliable friends you could have in game.

65 mb at that time would have been very massive, since my own Amstrad 286 also with Windows 2 had 1 MB (640 kB). I later upgraded this box to a total of 4 MB (?) with some kind of memory card and replaced the 40 MB disk with a 100 MB disk which did cost more than 1000 German Mark. Incredible the developement of hardware since then.
And even in that time we had games, which were fun to play and did fit on one, two or some more floppy disks of 720 KB, since not every customer had a HD floppy drive.
Today: Patches of 8 GByte are not totally uncommon any more.

I've always jokingly said when I'm old and no longer can tap then I take a "Zivi" (community service workers) who must do it then for me and a projector as a monitor : D
I would have never thought it in a retirement home is possible to play online games.

Olahorand, you are quite right - it couldn't have been 65 MB of ram. Now I really think about it, I think it was the HD that had the 65 mb and the memory was actually 4 MB. It wasn't new when I had it, so had possibly been upgraded from 1 MB. I've never been much good with figures and my memory was playing tricks. Whatever, I had a lot of fun with that old machine and it taught me a lot :).
