I think you can already pick out their eyeballs if you harvest them. On occassion, they'll give you some silk too.:)

I assumed that their harvestable poison would be used for the poison potions....? (haven't looked at the recipe yet)

I agree that they are one of the most annoying and frustrating aspects of leveling...

... but I dont mind this game being extremely hard, either :-D. i really love the item-impermanence factor of ultima/SoTA, and its not that i love having my favorite stuff destroyed, but i feel that it is one of many traits that make these game systesm unique. therefore, i suffer the endless wrath of spiders, and the decay of my rare items, only for the greater good of the game system's uberness.

I guess it depends on the order of starting zones you take. When I have hunted spiders with my chief weapon skill around 40, I never had a big problem?

Theyre especially tricky with the hand axe - the baseline mace weapon - as the range is super short. The webs prevent melee until the spell times out.

Well, we know they don't really like us outsiders, so it stands to reason they probably giggle about the ghosts and spiders doing horrid things to us.

I think that part of what I perceive to be the problem is everyone is in a hurry. I do think for the alpha/beta testing they should give us levels that we could test with. This would be for pvp and pve. The testing of progression is easily done in the early levels but not many people play till the later levels to train. After launch I want a hard game that takes a while to level up, and earn it, but for now, it really is discouraging to have to regrind after 23 releases.

Be extra careful at low levels. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Take a look at the stake and skulls for the scenes that have them. Are there more than one or two skulls? If yes, then leave. Try to get only one opponent to come at you. Flee if more than one comes at you. Flee if the battle is not going your way. This applies at higher levels, as well. As I've just found out in the Mysterious Swamp. I'm at a level that I could handle the red spiders there in earlier releases. This release, even a single red spider gives me a close battle. I've had to flee the single large red spider I've encountered. The elder wolves tore me up, too.

Some of the time. Also try going in different directions and rolling maybe.

I have to admit it's hard to find a 1 skull location that isn't covered in crippling spiders. But that's the nature of the spiders, just avoid them. It isn't super easy leveling right now, but I like it. In the end it'll force people to minimally grind. Grind can be bad, but it can be good. I mean, a game with zero grind isn't worth playing really. There's just a hurdle that you have to jump over, a hill to climb and after that it's smooth sailing.

Wouldn't fire burn through a web and remove the root?

I hate the red ones... any variety! :p

AL 39 and (nearly) pure melee and they are the only spider type to consistently kick my backside from small to large type.

Then again, your whirling blades just popped to 67 in that. I haven't even trained it yet, but the tier above it has only just broken the 40's *laughs*

I was in Kingsroad for a while yesterday. Holy crap they should name that place to "Spidersroad". Any time you stopped moving there were suddenly at least three spiders on you.

Spiders are not programmed properly in the first place. Spiders do not pack up and chase, spitting poison and magic root spells. If coded properly, you should only be attacked by spiders when you get caught in their webs. I know there are spiders which throw webs, and some that are solitary hunters, so being chased by a spider is OK. It's just the mob attacks in the open with no webs around that is wrong. I also think that a single fire spell, arrow or fire weapon should burn all their little legs off with a single use. Then you would have little spider bodies rolling around cluttering the place.

    Owl's Nest is easy.

When you first enter, let the spiders kill you and then -- as a ghost -- run to the other end of the map where the ankh is and rez. Problem solved. It's much easier to start from the other end of the instance.
