I know some people will want their name to be unique, but the trade off will be disappointed players who can't have the name they want because it is already taken.

Personally, I think it would be neat to allow multiple players to RP that they're part of the same lineage.

Last names will not be unique. It's the combination of first and last name that will have to be unique.

I prefer it that way. Not all my RP characters are related, and some are actively against the others. :)

You would expect husband and wive to want the same last name in game. Maybe even some guilds mates would want to form The McCloud Brothers Guild or something and everyone has the last name McCloud. I just would think the last names would not be unique.

Will first names that don't have a surname attached to them be unique?

We'd have to ask the team, but my assumption would be the first guy to get in and claim the name "Frank" with no surname will be unique, and everyone named Frank thereafter will have to put something in the Surname field.

I'm thinking of trying to organize some players who have pledged high enough to have a crest in the game to perhaps share a last name and crest. Create an in game family/lineage across multiple players.

    Damnit, Frank!

    I wanted to be Frank.

You can be Frank, as long as you beat the other Franks to it.
I'm going to be using my last name.

    Sir Frank,

    How would that work?

From my understanding there will be new players with no pledges, or players that didn't pledge high enough to have access to early last names. This would mean that alot of Avatars will be created using only 1 name to start with.

If this is the case, then how would this effect unique first names.

    I have no idea, really.
My guess is that all people will have access to last names.
People who pledge high enough for early last names will be able to get in before launch to claim their name.
But really, we'd have to ask Portalarium, as I am not in the loop.

Right, which works a treat in games like Guild Wars 2. Plenty of variation for everyone. Plenty of opportunity for the same firstnames or surnames to double up 100 times over, if need be.

It's also a great way to stop people being names like Xxxalexander if, for example they wanted to be Alexander, but the game only allowed one Alexander. In GW2, you can Have Alexander Smith, Alexander Jones, Alexander Brown, etc, etc.

Would also be nice to know, if a pledge bonus last name can be added at a later time or if it can be changed.
