That much I understand. I just mean that if the same person didn't bother anyone in-game and instead used the player marketplace, would they still be a gold farmer? If not, then maybe spammer or pirate or something would be a better term. If so, it would seem strange to me that gold coin would be different than gold ore or any of the other things that exist in the game.

so..... don't want to beat a dead horse here or anything but just to clarify, say someone owns and operates a game gold site... (for a specific example of one there is: searchuo.com for the game ultima online) but they did not actually mention it ingame OR in the sota forums...
and say it got found out that they owned it, would their account(s) get banned from the game?
i dont mean to be a pain, but this is something that I've been wondering about for awhile....

Gold farmers should definitely be insta-banned as well as other people trying to take advantage of people in the game like people that claimed prime lot locations early and are trying to rent them out for money..

Are they selling gold coin for $ or gold ore/ingots for gold coin? Anyway, I don't even have zone chat turned on.

[edit] NM. After reading through the posts, it's clear. :)

well thanks for your opinion Link, I appreciate that you feel strongly about this

but I was hoping for a more official TOS sort of response actually... ?
I know that purchasing gold from these sites created an inflation problem in uo... although as fewer peeps play the game it seems to have leveled out a bit

I went back just now and re read the marketplace rules. I haven't used it much and didn't realize that real money trades were restricted to pledge and add on items, so that mostly answers my question, although players can still use their gold to buy those items from other players in game and then sell them on the marketplace.

How is gold selling any different then the player market place selling various account items or the SOTA store? Dont get me wrong im no fan of gold sellers but this is kind of the atmosphere sota has created for itself pay real world dollars for in game items... i fail to see what the big deal about gold is.

Thinks someone paid Port a nice sum for those stuff that they sell on the player market. At best will be a one-time transaction of gold/irl$.

A gold farmer at best will pay $45 (assuming the account isn't ill-gotten). Do multiply transactions. Inject countless gold. And Port really gets no additional benefit - hurts even, when the player could be buying the coins(COTOs) directly from Port and exchanging it with players in game directly - where the money would help fund Port.

@Berek - The above post has a good point, can we get some more guidance on what seperates a very active marketplace trader from a gold farmer?

It's one thing to say "You know it when you see it", but someone could argue someone selling cotton for CotOs on the marketplace is also a gold farmer in their eyes, so having some more clear guidelines would help people feel more at ease I think.

I agree with those who offer a word of caution on this topic: The 'F' word is not the problem. The 'S' words are.

Nothing is inherently wrong with "F'arming cotton, iron, mandrake, or creatures that drop items including gold. The game is designed to enable all of this farming as a major feature of the fun. And gold is no different a currency than any other item farmed in game given that most other item can be very easily converted to gold in game by selling it to a vendor at any time.

The issue is with different kinds of "meta game" behaviors beyond what is designed into SOTA. These tend to be "S" words: Spamming. Scamming. Stealing, etc. Keep the banning focus there.

Wow some of you people are really slow....

It is, in pretty much every mmo, against the rules. Either written or otherwise. To buy / sell in game currency for real life cash. It is frowned upon in every MMO, yet people still do it because they get desperate, or just don't want to be bothered to farm for things themselves.

Buying gold with real life cash from a third party site does nothing for the in game economy except trash it. It also makes the company that created the game no extra income. Where as say you buy from Port a COTO or whatever it's called. That money goes directly towards the development of the game / people that created the game rather then the pocket of people that only look to exploit their work of art to make themselves some cash. Which then you can turn around and sell that COTO in game for gold.

Your money goes DIRECTLY to Port this way. Which helps further the game. Why give your money to a third party, which not help the game in any way, but rather F up the economy that we are all right now trying to get started and settled.... The #1 reason we are a persistent world right now.

In the end, the forums will only reach about 40% of the community, which means there will of course be those in game that will still purchase gold. It is up to us 40% to internet shame them for doing so :p

Given Portalarium endorses RMT in SotA, I don't quite understand the complaints beyond spamming the chat channel. And if they are only advertising their "wares" every five minutes, it's not really spamming, is it? Perhaps if they worded it in Elizabethan english it would be more palatable?

If the RMT rule is that the trading forum is the ONLY allowed venue for such trades then I could see where people are coming from, but at this moment, I don't know if that is the case. Perhaps Portalarium should be more explicit on their stance regarding where RMT can take place.

They might be dumb, but they surely know h0w t0 misp3l1 their web site name in l33t such that you can still figure out what it is.

I have a screen shot someone posted in chat the other day. I didn't look at the price until now but my eyes bugged out when I did look just now. I will only say holy crap that was an expensive price. I could get a lot more simply by buying CotOs from the add-on store and selling them at such a brain-damaged lowball price that they would be gone in minutes.

    CotOs:
    - do not add cash to the economy (gold farmers get gold from monster drops and selling to NPCs, gold that otherwise would not have been farmed, whereas CotOs sell for gold already farmed as a side-effect of playing the game)
    - are consumable (either for rents or for repairs) and will have no permanent effects on the economy
