Acceptable Names

I guess this is why we can have lemons but not grapes in the game. Just saying that there are many words where a single letter could be a problem, not meaning to offend anyone.

 

I suppose "Vyvyan Basterd" is out of the question as well...

Problem is Portalarium are embracing this nonsense culture and actively encouraging people to report others.....starts with the nonsense over naming items, now naming characters.

Not a week goes by without some new tweak to rules and active encouragement for players to report others.

If only as much effort was made into encouraging people to play.

 

I want everything related to Halloween banned from the game and the forums because, as a pagan, I'm extremely offended by the lack of sensitivity toward my religion and the stereotypes this game promotes.

BTW, my real name is Jack Mehoff and I have a right to use it in-game, Port.

 

Port is dancing in a minefield here because some people in MMOs take their character name VERY SERIOUSLY and changing names willy nilly could result is levels of rage heretofore unseen. I don't think pissing off players that contribute to and support your MMO in favor of satisfying busy bodies is a good, dare I say profitable, tradeoff. I already know of several cases where they've managed to pissoff high level pledges based on trivial naming 'violations'.

 

I'm offended that you have appropriated the ACLU in this manner for your personal entertainment.

Ok, all this caused me to remember this video (it may not be work safe!). So this is all you guys fault!!

 

There really are getting to be to many double standards in this company anymore. I mean even Lord British was called out on his name and said more or less hey it is my game I can do what I want. Then we have this. The word Britches is not derogatory in any way, but was deemed as such by Moderation. Instead of saying hey you know what? I made a mistake. This word really is not bad in any way, we will let it pass. They choose to leave it so they do not look as if they have caved in on something. To me that is nothing but arrogance.
These double standards do not stop there. Honestly we are all sitting here discussing a moderation action that happened, and they have let the thread stand. Where other people make a thread about moderation results are are shut down immediately. Bad form Port... Bad form.

I've made the request for "Odorous Joe".

Many people have suggested I appeal the decision due to the absurdity of it all. The very first thing I did was appeal the decision, but my appeal was not addressed in any way.

 

That's a shame. Honestly it still blows my mind that someone actually went to the trouble of reporting "Britches". (But I bloody well hope someone did, because if it was someone in Port who decided to action the name of their own accord, things are even more dire).

I'm reminded of when someone found @Lum the Mad 's naming of cats to be risqué. Menzies IIRC.
I just wish that others at Portalarium would be as smart about it as Lum was.

This since the "eye of the beholder" offenses like this is such a huge slippery slope of good intentions with really bad results, and since it is too subjective it will always be arbitrary and unfair.

Again this is a game with PVP and guild warfare. This is opening another can of worms if it is open season on reporting things like this. Which not only opens up griefing opportunities galore, it will also cost Portalarium hours upon hours of policing when they need to sort out more and more far fetched naming offenses.

 

I will just keep this simple. Berek I think on this occasion you are just wrong.

 

Me and kron have a very checkered history from our past in UO.

But I've got to say, he should be able to have that name. He's been here since the early releases and I honestly thought stinky was the worse part of it, and only then because it's a distasteful choice.

If I were him, I'd just choose Kron Icd - a much superior name - but this is kron we're talking about, so I'm not surprised he would prefer Stinky Britches! So let him have it.
