Reflections on SotA Con East, November 4-6, 2016 With Photos

I know many have asked about this weekend’s SotA Con East so I thought I would post some of my thoughts and observations. I’m sure I’ll miss several interesting points, but in the interest of time, here ye go! Cheers, Johnkirk Bayard.

The Organizers – Violation Clauth, Eternal Knight (EK) and Winfield did an outstanding job making the event happen and succeed. My involvement with them began in August and they all shared a common goal; make SotA Con a success for the Community without funding from Portalarium. They did this at personal cost in time, effort and money and their dedication speaks volumes to the love and passion they have for SotA and the Community members. Bravo gentlemen, I would be honored to work with you again in the future.

The Community – What an incredible group! This was my first opportunity to meet other avatars in person and it was apparent that being involved in SotA transcended all other boundaries. I never heard any discussion of gender, race, religion, income or even politics during the Con. I find it notable to point out the lack of political discussion so close to the U.S. elections despite ample consumption of various brewed/fermented/distilled beverages. Bravo Community, I felt your acceptance and friendship every moment of the Con and will admit to feeling lonely when it all ended.

The Devs – We were fortunate to have Lord British, DarkStarr and Berek in attendance and they were all fully engaged throughout the Con. Lord British set the tone by dropping by the Hospitality Suite (hereafter referred to as Taberna Novia) Thursday afternoon and engaging some of the early arrivals in a high-spirited dialog on space exploration and commercialization. Throughout the Con, the Devs could be found in groups, and individually, conversing with community members. There didn’t seem to be any off-limits topics and their feedback was fair and candid. The discussion didn’t slow after-hours as everyone moved up to Taberna Novia each evening to continue until the wee hours of each morning. In one instance, Lord British took time to discuss the challenges of working in the gaming community with my daughter who wants to be a creative writer. His advice and specific recommendations are deeply appreciated. Bravo Devs, your sincere willingness to personally engage with Community members have made lifelong memories for me and probably many others as well.

The ‘Panels’ – These were more personable and free-form than others I’ve experienced. There were no tables and each Dev sat in a chair with a crescent of attendees in front of them. The Devs would start the ball rolling and then we would all see where it went in many cases. The panels got side-tracked on occasion, but never derailed. In fact, when interest about space was shown, Lord British, with Community agreement, added a special presentation about his experiences and thoughts. I won’t go into more detail here since some of the panels were already posted on the forums. Bravo to the organizers and Devs for being willing to conduct such a free-form style of discussion.

The Raffles – Wow! The physical prizes included rare (one of five) medallions, one-of-a-kind artist-signed comic boards, books, necklaces, fishing hats, etc. to in-game items like lot deeds, enchanted wolf hats, and a weapon made and signed in-game by Lord British (Congratulations May Day, now stop stealing apples from Lady British’s castle!). All attendees received at least one ticket by attending and they bought over 500 additional tickets during the Con. Lord British was a prolific buyer of tickets and won one of Winfield’s fishing hats. The Devs would also sign any item recently won for the lucky owner. Did you know our very own Berek has a book and interesting back-story? Bravo to the winners and everyone who donated items.

The Merchants – Relics by Rild and Tortoise and Hare Creations attended and had items for sale in addition to donating many items to the raffle. Their displays in the gaming room added extra color to the neutral hotel décor. I truly hope they made some coin to offset the task of packing, transporting and unpacking their wares. Bravo to the merchants for lightening my coin purse and adding some extra fun to the Con.

Taberna Novia – The hotel Hospitality Suite was converted to a period tavern fitted with relevant New Britanian decorations and immediately became SotA Con’s after-hours hangout. A hearty thank you to all of our visitors! I will leave further observations about Taberna Novia to others as I have a bias as the designer and proprietor of said establishment.

The VIP Event – Ten VIPs got to spend two hours with all three Devs in a non-attribution setting where what was discussed in Taberna Novia stayed in Taberna Novia. While I won’t disclose what was said, I can tell you that nothing discussed gave anyone an in-game advantage. An open bar and pizza were provided for the duration of the VIP event and then for another hour afterward so all Community members could enjoy some liquid refreshment. The chance to relax and get to know the Devs better was well worth the ticket price for me. Bravo to the organizers, Devs and VIPs for this event and all that transpired within.

The King’s Dinner at Medieval Times – EK coordinated the VIP Royalty package with excellent seating for our ~40 attendees. The show was entertaining as always and Lord British led chants of, “For the Virtues!”, while DarkStarr and his mob countered with, “For Chaos!” They even made a welcome announcement for, “Lord British and the New Britanians”. Unfortunately, our Red & Yellow knight got trounced in the first round but we cheered for the others anyway. Bravo to EK for handling this aspect of the Con and dealing with a corporate entity who had no idea who this Lord British guy was and why having him at your place of business is such a big deal.

The After-hours Hangouts – Taberna Novia stayed open every night until the last patron left, usually between 1:00 to 3:00 AM. These afforded everyone an opportunity to relax and enjoy fellowship and fun. One of the more popular tavern items was my daughter’s Book of Shakespearean Insults. Lord British, DarkStarr and Winfield all took particular pleasure in insulting each other in Ye Olde English. We saw magic tricks and played word games such as, “My Grandmother likes coffee, but doesn’t like tea” and another where, You Had To Speak Well But Know The Trick to Speak Well So That Others Would Not Make Fun Of You For Your Thick Tongue.

Other Observations and Thoughts – In addition to me personally having a great time, my daughters were able to attend and enjoy themselves. Now dad has to buy two more accounts so they can also become part of the Community!

Really what I want to see the most is pictures! Mostly the ones that were taken during happy hour!!

 

I will add my thoughts here about what I experienced at SoTA Con.

Acceptance - I don't know about anyone else, but coming out from behind an avatar can be a bit daunting. Nothing to hide behind! LOL Suffice it to say that I found acceptance *for who I am* from each and every person I met at SoTA Con. Whether it was having a *lively discussion* with Richard (zomg - this guy knows some of the great scientific minds of our time and his mind isn't too shabby either and I was *debating him* ROFL), making off color remarks with Lazarus, driving Shade, Morton, Ana, Steve, Berek and Valdor to Medieval Times or sharing cake with with Berek (that guy put up with a lot of my gum flapping...lol) I never once felt alone in the crowd or like a fish out of water.

Laughter - As Bayard mentioned, there was an utter lack of posturing about hot-button topics. If I were to assign a theme to the con it would be - Let the Good Times Roll! I was surrounded by laughter and I gotta tell you, it was music to my ears

One-on-one time - I was fortunate to not only meet many people I have either spent time with ingame or on TS, but to sit and spend some quality one-on-one time simply chatting with them. I also got to spend time with those I have never met ingame before. It was such a joy! It's hard to describe the beauty of people willing to give the gift of their time and attention. No games, no BS, no cliques - none of that. Just people loving people and getting to know each other on a more personal level.

Indi, Laz, Cordelayne, Richard, Berek, Sean, Bayard, Caska, Rhiannon, Mayday, Minerva, Roper, Rild, Lesni, Greyfox, Valdor, Shade, Tahru - I got you under my skin, I got you deep in the heart of me

Help! I Need Someone! - I don't move around very well and at times I'm in a lot of pain. This factoid was really evident to the group I was driving when we went to Medieval Times.

Valdor to the rescue! He let me hang onto him when we had some walking to do (and he made sure I got up and down the stairs alright). Steve, Ana, Morton, Shade, and Berek waited for Valdor and me to catch up to the group and Ana made it a point to make sure I was alright several times. Shade let me hang on him too...lol. He even pulled the car around so I had less walking to do when we left! Thank God cause I was beat Bless their hearts - I *REALLY* mean that.

Eternal Knight was always willing to help as well. When I got too cold in the conference room, he went out of his way to get the air conditioning turned down. Lesni noticed how cold my hands were and offered up his jacket to warm them. Winfield took it upon himself to pester Richard for an autograph when I was too hesitant to disturb him. These are just a few examples of people willing to help me out where they could. When you're like me and don't ask for help very well because you don't want to bother anyone, people gladly offering you help is like mana from heaven

Oh the humanity - Whether it was children or people my age, the wonders of humanity were on display.

I think the best illustration of this was watching Richard play with several of the children at Medieval Times. He was on the floor, rolling around, pretending that he lost the sword fight...lol. Those kids killed Lord British!

All weekend I was dazzled by his mind, but at that moment I truly saw *him*. Just a human being with a love of simple joys to be had. And that brought out my humanity, my inner child. I finally got up the courage to offer him a hug, which he returned with a smile! Then just to be sure I was truly going for it - I did the same with Starr. I offered him a hug and he accepted! I got hugs back, whoohoo! And she scores!!! Weird how I was always too chicken to hug those two until I saw those kids playing swords with a guy in a costume who was rolling on the floor laughing. Kids can teach you a LOT if you pay attention.

It is the truth, it's a fact, it's gravity man... My love to all I met, kudos to all who worked so hard to make SoTA Con happen and hugs to those who wanted to attend, but couldn't make it.

This con will remain in my memories for ever.
I have even made an entry into my 'memory jar' especially for it.

 

I am guessing that pic was taken before I got there. I was 24 hours late to the party. But at least I made it and met many of you fine people. I concur with all that has been said. I was really surprised at the "access" we all had to the devs and their willingness to listen and converse with each and every person. I didn't even have to try and convince my husband I should go to another one. He actually SUGGESTED it. Nothing like a spouse that supports your passions!

I have a lot of candid non-posed pictures I took over the weekend. I've seen a number of suggestions on where to post them. Have we settled on one yet?

 

Create a folder and upload all the pictures you want to share into that folder. then right click the folder name on your home screen and select share, then create link. Then copy the link and post it here.

 

I see one image of you and LB. When I click on your link it prompts me to join/login Dropbox but that overlay is easily dismissed.

 

Glad you all had a great time! From the pictures and all, it looks like it was a good event, hopefully more of you local's(as in the country) can make it to next years. The first of many. Wear your new cloaks with pride!

Every time i see LB interacting with any of us, forums or in RL, or in any interview, meets...whenever...he always comes across as very down to earth (ironic with him being a spaceman!) friendly, intelligent, humble, a good egg! Some strange reason this old 80's advert always pops up into my head....

I suggest posting photos in this thread since this is a post-Con thread and the other was primarily pre-Con prep and coordination. I've also asked Berek if he'll sticky this one for a time so that it's easier to find on the forums.

Lainybug will be creating a private Facebook album to post all her Con pix in (over 80 so far) BUT she'll post the 'best' ones in this thread as well.

 

I am going to post in the Pre-con thread and send them to this one for future photos and videos.

I am finally processing the Astronaut videos from LB and the Dev session with Starr Long and will be posting them as they are ready in YouTube.

 

Thank you for posting the photos Rhiannon! My sister and I also missed out on the group photo (we were also late to the party), but I am so happy to see the event from the perspectives of others. At least we made it into the Medieval Times photo, which we are very thankful to have!

It was so much fun to meet so many great people and I look forward to the next convention and ability to meet many more!

Your images are not showing. Perhaps you missed a step or you need to click on each individual photo and get the image address that way.
You can edit the posts and fix them any time

Could be a permissions thing with dropbox, or it doesn't allow hotlinking.

 

Not sure since the one that Lensi quoted showed the thumbnail to me. And the one he linked from my folder worked fine. I've deleted the pics until I can figure it out, as well as a number of posts. Don't want to clutter this thread up with my ponderings.

The way I did it was this.
Go to your Dropbox address:
https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mimwpe2a50v81rr/AADhxXPqHMM-S_3k8zPZy_2Wa

Click on an individual picture and it will open in a single picture.
Right click on the picture and select Copy Image Address.
Paste that into the Image box in the post.
