Oh cr*p. How to even select such few from such long lists of people one wants to mention?
OK I will go for the explicit interpretation of "an opportunity to say thank you to people that have improved your experience in game or out".
First I'd like to do two honorable mentions to two who is by default disqualified.

for always being nice, always welcoming all to the forum, first poster I met and recognized in the game, who helped me level and start out in the game that very first time I played, also the first player to help me get my first Hot Tub in the game to start testing my Thermae ideas, I need to improve my german though...

@Duke Violation,
due to all the 3rd party sites like the event calender, the wiki, the early tournaments, never really interacted in game but still affected my enjoyement of the game very much

@Vyrin,
for being the first to give some positive feedback on Lux Sanctuary (& first to book a visit) and being a positive reinforcement of ones crazier ideas, then also for all the writing feedback on my stories and for the Obsidian project we did, good times

@Myrcello,
for setting the bar for forum feedback to the devs and the first instance where I saw it had an actual impact

@Time Lord / Tahru, (I still think it's a multiple personality disorder)
for all the positive spin, the likes, the camraderie and that they almost never lose their temper, unlike the rest of us, making the forums a better place

Such an hard choice!!!

But the goal is a noble one - as I would expect from Tahru. The winner will get some tangible "thank you", and Portalarium earns some extra money. Even if it's a popularity contest (with all the caveats added about ego stroking and poll rigging), the end result will be positive for everyone.

Spoon - for being a generous, available, kind, living wiki about SotA [this is recognition for whoever digs into details and documents features]
Themo Lock - for giving me hospitality in PeV, and giving me the chance to discover the social side of SotA [this is recognition also for our guild]
Winfield - whose vision and passion is second only to LB [this is recognition also for Paxlair project and members]
Wody Draconisaer - because his tavern in Kingsport is where I want to go, when I sheath my cutlasses and need a place to relax [this is recognition also for Phoenix Republic project and members]

Finally, I'm deeply humbled by Ice Queen's mention.

Envy - seems to take very little guff from folks - you dont get away with many idle comments
Gaylike - has wicked great posts and interest in the game

Spoon - has a soothing spirit i feel - her posts seem heartfelt towards your post at times
Marjoria7something - come on, she's never said anything REALLY negative yet - she's gonna flame post something stunning in the future...

Agree, Hendoman about Majoria. She's like a nun. Really hoping she finally lets it all out, and just RIPS everyone apart with expletive after expletive after expletive

i appreciate the nomination --- I'd like to nominate Lord British for the environment, Dark Star for his advice of being leeter, a few others I haven't met yet. On top of that, I'd like to show some appreciation for the leveling system, 1500xp for ebon cultists is sweet for those of us who are a high enough (no item drops, but the xp is appreciated!!!!!!!)

I'll take my recommendations of nominations as the following from the player base:
net, themo lock, doctor shroud, and hendoman

 

I nominate Mata for their absolute friendliness and helpfulness of all the players. She always has a helping hand and an open ear and support the German community of the role players active. It is a pleasure to know her.

I nominate Senash Kasigal for his enormous commitment to the German community. Without his great forum and service we have a great problem.

I'm not going to do five, because I don't like rules, and if I leave someone out they will be publicly humiliated by the omission, and I will feel guilty. However these folks add disproportionately to the content here, and we should be glad to have them:

MadHermit, for his perfect and invaluable videos, good humor and commentary.
Baron Drocis, though we often disagree, for his passionate love of the game and well-reasoned posts. I have come to admire him even though he is usually wrong.
Bowen Bloodgood, for the same reasons as Baron Drocis, and an added measure of artistic creativity, and because he will come to love Santa hats.

The rest of you can burn in hell.

Exactly what I was thinking, except for the Inferno part. It's much worse than that. I feel like I need to bring a towel with me when I visit the forums so I can clean up after.
