I know there are few linux guys out there. I just wanted to give you a heads up that Erik M. has the Linux version up and running on his laptop with Gentoo on it and even on a laptop it looked and ran great. Just sharing the news as I know there were a fair number of Linux people begging us not to ignore them and then port it over afterwards. You might be the minority but you will not be forgotten!

Fantastic news Chris, this is great to hear.
Personally, I suspect, given the "direction" MS is taking with their console and desktop OS in the past few years, Linux will become more popular.

I will probably be using the Windows version for a while, but glad to know SOTA will be there when I finally ditch it for Linux. :)

I'm actually sort of interested if they could do it for XBox. I realize this breaks some immersion for RPG. But I think people could do some pretty awesome thing with crafting using things like Kinect controller or the dance pads, guitars, etc.

I think the matching rules would allow for an environment where people could play very different aspects of the game on different platforms. So I could do some things on PC, some on phone/tablet, some on XBox with some amount of overlap.

Just the licensing fees to get on Xbox would kill the budget. Not to mention the new MS policy that requires developers to have a publisher. No, please no Xbox.

This is sort of "the year of Linux gaming" with steam releasing a Linux version etc. Since there aren't that many great games out for Linux yet this is a good opportunity to let them know about SotA and get some new potential pledges. The Linux gaming market is growing, and by the time SotA is released who knows how many Linux gamers there will be. I do know they are looking for good games that run on Linux natively.

I'm willing to bet many of the new Linux gamers don't know much about Ultima, but they are also the type of group that might want to use a DOS emulator and play the originals before SotA is released.

Can you tell us how much trouble it was getting a Linux version working with Unity? Did it require much fiddling with the code and settings or did Unity handle it like a champ?

    Unity guys are amazing :p
Can you post some videos of linux demo? I know few people who didn't pledge because they were not sure the game will ever come to linux. Perhaps they'll reconsider if they see it.

Well since Steam supports Windows, Mac, and Linux it would be awesome to have it on there for every platform! Only thing left is Android and iOS!

I am all for SotA supporting Windows, Mac OS, and Linux OSes.

Please Portalarium don't "favor" one platform who gets the new version first and follow up with the Mac OS version the next month, followed by the Linux version the following month. This really turns off the player base.

Unity supports exporting to almost every platform so this shouldn't be an issue I would say for the most part there shouldn't be any platform dependant work being done because Unity takes care of all of that for you instead of you having to make a different code tree for each platform. In fact Unity even supports exporting to Mobile Devices (Android/iOS) and Consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) so basically aside from controls and ensuring those devices actually have enough power to run the game they should be able to build the game and put it on any platform they choose with a simple export command.

I mentioned on another thread that I took a Unity app, built it for Linux and ran in under Fedora 17. The only issue
I had was needing to install the proper NVIDIA drivers.

Huzzah. Hopefully means I can get it running on my Ubuntu desktop and Lubuntu laptop.

    Edit:
Was this running under Wine or a Wine variant, or using a native linux binary?
