Have to admit that I was disappointed. While the ship preserves the yard, it doesn't have a lot of space on board.

Obviously if it ever had the functionality of flying then it would be nice to have.

Come to Drakenhof and see what our German friends are doing. The airship might not make the most spacious home but I can see it has a place in game.

Cool. I'll get there at some point! Perhaps once I see one decorated I'll warm up to them again.

I think you will. Besides it was a dark and stormy night when I made that video.

They are not airships, until they can fly around. Right now they are way overpriced ways to use up a huge part of your deed with a single decoration.

Thank-you for that. I have one but have not found a city lot I could put it on so haven't seen it yet.

It looks a lot like the Baron Founder Galleon I have but it's in the air. I like that it saves on lot space, does anyone know if you can place misc buildings like stables, tents, etc under the ship?

Maybe by Episode 5 we'll have this going on:

There are only two decks on the airship (including the surface). IIRC, the Galleon has three.

I'd like to know the answer to the latter question too. It looks like you should be able to fit a bunch of stuff underneath but not seen that in game yet.

Well if indeed you have room to place anything under the airship, then it might have some value outside being a huge decorative piece.

Can someone explain to me how they could implement air ships and boat travel in a game with load screens between each town/zone/overland map? The only thing I can conceptualize is you double clicking the helm and selecting a destination, then after a load screen you appear at the destination in an instanced, predefined "landing-pad".

Where exactly is it we could "fly" the airship or sail a boat? The overland map is disproportionate to the character, so a boat/airship wont work, especially if they plan to maintain the controls points, which it looks like they will.

I'm not trying to crush dreams here, as I said, I just cant conceptualize how this would work.

Considering the functionality is not expected to be available in Episode 1, I would suspect the devs would simply adjust future overworld maps to be "airship/boat" compatible.

Namely, you could still have control points for boats for instance : Attempting to cross the entrance for a bay could require you entering a combat scene.

As to what would happen during ship travel : Encounter scenes could still occur. Conceptually it would be you on your boat, surrounded by whatever is in the encounter.

For instance, A Kraken off the port bow... Or a treasure island where you could temporarily disembark and investigate. :)

    ----

For entering surface scenes, one simply needs to have the ship docked "off-scene", and have your avatar walk into the scene as normal.

Then when they exit the scene, they reboard their ship and continue on their way.

If you wanted to disembark and start walking overland, perhaps you could only do so at specific docking locations. Rather than say leaving your boat on some far-off shore with no way to recover it.

    ----

The "airships" do indeed add an additional wrinkle, since having control points for flying objects is a tad difficult.

However, much like the Magic Carpet in the Ultima series, they could be limited by certain terrain (high mountains). So control points for them could be devised as well.

    ----

Really though, that functionality is so far in the future, the devs have plenty of time to design for them. :)

Control points could also have a defense that shoots you down where in you will enter the scene. You can always repair the airship and take off once you reach the other side. Just a thought. :)

In Ultima V, there were reefs that damaged your ship, so you had to leave your frigate with a skiff, which was more dangerous.

Try putting a hatch on the ship and a 5 level city basement... Lots of room. Maybe they will make and giant hold theme with leaks, rats and pumps?
