How can we all be "the" avatar?

Hope this will be explained when episode 1 is properly released.

To Blade of the Avatar readers ; Were there any clues clarifying above fact?

 

Not really. There is some interesting background stuff but nothing that touches on player related lore.

"How can we all be 'the' avatar?" Is a question Lord British and Tracey Hickman thought about quite a bit during their design discussions making the story. I look forward to learning the answer as it is revealed while playing the game!

 

In the book they talk about avatars in the old times and there have been already several. I don't think it is like in the ultima games that avatar == hero. And who wants to be an avatar, he has to follow the virtues or find them again. Chaos rules.

 

It seems apparent to me that the meaning of the title Avatar has changed since the original. Ultima fans may recall that the title Avatar was given to the one who completed the quest of the avatar and attained enlightenment in the 8 virtues. At no point was it ever a prerequisite that someone be from another world. Anyone from Britannia could have became an Avatar.

It just so happens that the Avatar and most of his companions were off worlders. So the title has come to be associated with other worldly origins rather than simply enlightenment in the virtues.

In either case it also seems apparent that the Arabella text and intro for the game are centered around the single player experience. It probably should not be carried over into multiplayer.

 

True fact. But here we have our endgame, there can only be one AVATAR.

 

Talking with NPCs, especially chatty/quest ones, they often mention a new influx of many, many outlanders. So the fabric of the story already accounts for avatarS, and the Dark Prophecies may be related even with group of them.

 

I have long since noted now that 'outlander' is the favorite term among the natives rather than avatar.

Besides, at some point you need to disregard that which doesn't make any sense or it will always be there hanging over your head.

Errr this is still bugging me. The Oracle says that I AM THE AVATAR!!! ME ONLY ME!!!!!! Perhaps she is saying that to all the Outlanders? Anyone have any links from Tracy about it?

 

I don't think Richard or Tracy has addressed the subject directly. They've talked in very broad terms about making a multiplayer story but that's about it.

 

I just can't see how they can bring the single campaign together with the multiplayer setting without things going sideways lore wise. I have a feeling they do have a way, have faith in Tracy and Richard for great storytelling, it's just I can't piece it together in my head.
