I know they only moves when the lot owner is there but could they use a different positioning?

A cat/dog should be sleeping instead of standing up like a statue.

Agreed, I always thought this was a bit odd looking.

Is that how it works? I know mine had a toggle to make it roam around, I just assumed that for some reason, everyone else was setting theirs to be static.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think that is what's happening. I can think of a few other deco pets I've seen that do roam around, even when I'm the only person in the POT.

Also their nameplates don't appear unless you are the owner of the pet. I thought it was a bug until I was corrected.

Still feels odd. Maybe Pet's can get some lovin :)

If I put a decoration pet on my own village lot, it works as described in the Player Instructions:

Right-clicking on the placed pet allows you to set its behavior or recover it to your inventory.

Set to "patrol", the pet wanders around. I have two squirrels on my lot that act amazingly real.

When I put a pet on a lot belonging to my Alt, (I am co-owner) the pet stood like a statue and right-clicking only gave me the "Permissions" dialogue. So I had to log in as my Alt and pick up and place the pet down again to get it to move around.

they actually have gotten some love recently. they're still just standing there, but they do wiggle and fidget a bit. that's pretty new.

IIRC, currently deco pets use the full NPC AI and are quite costly. There was a mention by Chris ( I think) that a solution would replace the AI with a set of fidgets.

This is bad news for me! My squirrels currently roam around looking for nuts. If they just fidget it will be a real setback :(

Your squirrels only roam because you are the lot owner. If you aren't present on your lot then your squirrels become statues; this is how everyone else sees them.

i'd almost be willing to put up with a cat that would just sit and fidget or curl up and sleep IF i could put it on my bed, not just the ground or the floor.

Oh, how sad, I didn't know that. Still, I like coming home to see them running around. It would make me unhappy if I didn't see them do that any more.

I am so happy to see that pets looking like statues will soon be a thing of the past!
    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/vendor-variations-improvements.109392/

"We are also moving player vendors to actual NPCs with AI behaviors (vs just being interfaces) so that they can animate, sit down, etc. (instead of being statues that are just interfaces). This will allow us to do things like have vendors who don't have inventory or haven't had any sales in a long time sit down or wander inside as an example. This is part of a much larger (and VERY cool) tech task where npcs on lots and towns can now act independently of their owner. This is going to allow us to finally have pets move and behave when the owners isn't around instead of just being statues. "
