Pledge gear should never become unusable.

As for other gear could possible keep track of total durability damage so far
And make so cost to repair was proportional to the 10 logarithm

    • total taken 10 or less 100%
    • total taken 100 log (100) = 2 so 200%
    • total taken 1000 log(1000) = 3 so 300%
Appendum: could have so when crafting the item the quality made decides which logaritm to use
so really bad could use 2 logaritm and good higher

The comment was more directly referring to the fact that the people making those items have a dead end market, much like gear creators are claiming. Not that we are currently expecting wear and tear on it (though I have heard people in most recent telethon asking about wear on things like planters which is a decorative/required agriculture item).

I came here to agree with @PK U actually. I was perplexed by this too... and I am not a PK'er or A PVPer so PK U and I very rarely agree XD Glad to see you guys are thinking on this. I TOTALLY agree that there needs to be some gear degredation over time. Finite economy doesnt matter if everything is permanent.

This is what we need, @DarkStarr

It is okay that it can break - if to keep it from breaking we have to have it repaired by skilled repair folks.

    Just my opinion of course.

Yes, it matters. I'm planning to run a shop, and I'll be happy to do repairs for anyone that needs them. However, what is the point of these thousands of recipes if everyone only keeps the same items they started with? There are already "best" sets of gear, and noone is going to buy anything else unless they can't keep that gear 100% of the time.

New characters are going to be few and far between, compared to how many crafters we have in the game. And I don't think we can rely on PVP players to restock gear; the few I've found seem to stockpile crap gear, which isn't what I'm planning to make, or they make their own.

Actually, I hope so. Food already has a plan (that Richard talked about at one point) to spoil after some amount of time. I think decorations should decay after some amount of time as well, and need to be repaired. This can even have a visual effect if they are willing, by adding a "dust" layer for items 50%-80% and a "scuff and dent" layer for <50%. "Broken" deco can be repaired to 100%, no problem, but can't be use as deco until it is. Depending on the repair prices, especially if costs increase the more an item is repaired, eventually it will be worthwhile to replace. (It would also be easy to make pledge and add-on store items have a minimum durability, so they don't ever "break".)

But not really, because carpenters and tailors have other options to make items besides furniture. It would seem if someone chose carpenter as a profession, to limit it to furniture (instead of including bows and shields) would be a roleplaying decisions over a financial one. Their skillset would still yield the ability to make money if they choose. I could be a tailor and just make bodice tops, but I would be choosing to limit my own sales possibilities.

Could handle some of this through weapon souls? A weapon soul/intelligent weapon could move from weapon to weapon, as they increase in power they become more difficult to control. If the physical sword permanently breaks, the lower to average weapon souls can be extracted from the broken pieces. More powerful weapon souls may be 'unleashed' from the destroyed weapon in which case they must be tamed or subdued through force to bring them back in line. If they are tamed, they retain their full power, if they are subdued through force they lose a slight amount of their power. The destroyed weapon pieces could be repaired, but their chance of success is very low for unskilled blacksmiths (need a high repair skill to put them back together, and in this case the repair functions just like a salvage, but after so many repair attempts you get scraps)

Perhaps in the case of powerful weapon souls it might take multiple players to tame them and infuse them back into the weapon. Also these types of weapon souls will make demands of the avatar, sometimes driving them to do non-virtuous things. (it is a weapon that slays things over and over again after all) For example - perhaps the weapon needs an official 'resting place' when not in use, perhaps in the hands of a statue, or a finely crafted weapon rack in order to recharge itself. Or perhaps more sick and twisted weapon souls want to be surrounded by the things they've slain, or surrounded by piles of gold, etc, etc

You could limit the power of the weapon souls by only allowing the avatar to benefit from a few of the accumulated powers at once and perhaps alchemy could be used to express the stored powers, while the other powers lay dormant. But as the weapon soul grows in power, it could be communicated with as if it's an npc. (which would allow you to define the properties of the weapon by communicating to the weapon soul) The soul itself seems like it would be a wisp type of creature, and perhaps the very powerful and ancient souls would be more similar to ghosts. The weapon soul is a resource item, but when it escapes from a weapon it will show it's true form.

Perhaps if the weapons start to become too evil they can be cleansed in some way. The weapon soul concept would allow weapon memory features to be carried over from each weapon, but add some restrictions to keep them balanced.

I'm honestly hoping that they change pledge gear to being a skin you can place over NPC vendor or crafted gear of the same type. It's currently obsolete prior to stepping out of the lunar rift. Would be nice to wear it with something that players made. This would allow me to switch out gear as I respec while still looking the same (assuming it is same type, cloth for cloth, leather for leather, etc.).

People seem to fixate a lot on the 'crafters will still make money' side of the game, but there should be a lot more to it than that ...

Part of the fun of crafting in UO, for example, was discussing with the player exactly what they wanted in their equipment, since in recent years the options with imbuing, enhancing, reforging and a ton of other ways to tweak item properties, working out the necessary resources and intensities of effects, and the resulting interactions between all the pieces, made being a specialist in crafting much more fun - sure you can 'make a living' by repairing, and repairing, and repairing.... if you call that 'living'. I'd rather play a crafter that's enjoyable and fun, not just a 'drop off items with me to fix' robot.:)

I would happily buy your bodices and supply them to all newcomers. 8^)

The problem is that crafted items are also supposed to populate loot tables and NPC vendors (eventually) which means you will (and this is important) ALWAYS have a market no matter how much you craft. People only crafting the highest end stuff that hits the highest end loot table and ignore the lower loot tables with basic items are doing the exact thing you are talking about. Yes, you can craft a pretty bodice or a great uber enchanted 2 handed sword of pain bringing awesomeness(tm) but you are limiting the market you are selling in. If you are crafting in the full range of EVERY weapon and level then your items will be selling to NPCs for loot tables. That has always been the plan. It creates an unlimited market, though you may not be able to charge top dollar for it.

I would love to custom order things from people and work with the crafter of my choice to create exactly what I desire. I've done that with a few vendors for my mage gear in past releases and I agree it was very fun. The problem is, there is a limited market for customized high end items. Item breakage and repair does not resolve this issue quite as much as people seem to think it will.

Having said that... I'm still hunting for a leather worker and wood worker to make me some amazing mage stuff this release in case anyone in here is bored and focused in those areas. 8^)

I bought the Elven Bow in the Goal pledge thingy understanding it would never break nor would I lose it from others looting it or mobs. I hope any thing we pay for with real money, is something that cannot be looted or for ever loose its durability... There would be a lot of UNHAPPY campers. Just want to make sure items bought with cash is untouchable from others unless we gift it or sell it, but other wise something we will never loose no matter what....

I prefer this type of death punishment over increasing our rez timers any more. :(

I find it very boring waiting on my rez as it is.

BTW, I have no intentions of buying EVER something that becomes useless because crafted will always be better. Why? Makes no sense, was a mistake on my part, won't happen again. UNLESS they make it so I can upgrade my cash items to compete with crafted ones. because then my bow becomes obsolete to me. .... Would be nice if I can craft a bow and select the look of my elf bow with it, with no chance of my elf bow breaking, and doing so would make my elf bow to become a house decoration for my wall ....
