Actually, some exceptional are coming out as +4 (chests). But, regardless, the numbers are off.

    @ldykllr
I believe they are now including material properties in the +n.

Interesting... @Lexie can we get confirmation?

While it will be great to see confirmation, if you go back and look at 'old' items, all of the +'s are adjusted. I was 'really confused' when I got notification that a +2 item had sold for 190; but I don't list +2 items for 190 ... then I figured out they re-jiggered the system.

    No, there's something wonky.

I'm looking at a normal Maple Long Bow that is +2 but with just maple and cotton. Nothing fancy, it's a +2 somehow.

I'm looking at another one of them that is a +1, and it has had a crafting failure on it, other than that it's just a normal, non-exceptional Maple Long Bow. If anything it should be a Maple Long Bow -1.

I'm not sure if the new way of doing it is to start everything off as a +2, and then subtract with failures, hoping they stay above 0, but that won't work. You can get enough negatives on some of the augmented stuff that it would still conceivably be a -1.

Just let normal gear start as it was, and if it gets negatives on it, let it be -2 or whatever. That will be a good incentive for the crafter to go sell that junk to an NPC.

Having everything start as +2 is very misleading.

I don't have a carpenter (yet) but I assume it works the same as Blacksmithing where even the most basic materials give some kind of bonus. So you're getting +1 for Maple bow stave and +1 for Cotton string.

Who knows why, but this is something that used to exist back when crafting first started. Back then, the item created received a + for each bonus added, and since the materials themselves impart a bonus to the end product, a simple bow or sword would come out as a +2 bow or +2 longsword. The more basic materials used, the more +'s an item would have. Then if it were an exceptional item, that would give another + to it.

Yes, I suspected this was intended but I wanted to get confirmation. It is intended. Turns out components were always meant to add up to the item score and this is now working correctly.
There may be some additional tweaks to this system in the future.

This means (for example) Elven Estocs can drop as a +1 if they have an elven hilt. Makes it a lot easier to see vs having to hit control.
    Good changes me thinks!

If you guys still find bugs with the above info in mind, please report.

Tweaks suggested in the above post. Hopefully someone sees them ;)

Right now a basic copper dagger starts as a +2, which isn't very useful information.

Thanks @Lexie ! Yeah, I think there are some tweaks that need to be made, will try to report any oddities that I see.

    @Lexie

If this is working as intended, then I recommend you reconsider your intentions. In my opinion, more distinct components does not deserve a higher "+" level. For example, my crafted, unexceptional Epic Cloth Armor have the following "+" values:

    +1 Cotton Epic Cloth Boots
    +2 Cotton Epic Cloth Gloves
    +2 Cotton Epic Cloth Helm
+2 Cotton Epic Cloth Leg Armor
+1 Cotton Epic Cloth Chest Armor

Why should Chest Armor (with 10 Bolts of Cloth) be lower "+" value than Gloves (with 3 Bolts of Cloth and 1 Cloth Strap)? It's even worse when comparing to other "styles" of cloth armor. For example, unexceptional Augmented Cloth Armor would have the following "+" values:

    +2 Cotton Augmented Cloth Boots
    +2 Cotton Augmented Cloth Gloves
    +1 Cotton Augmented Cloth Helm
+3 Cotton Augmented Cloth Leg Armor
+3 Cotton Augmented Cloth Chest Armor

This system is going to be super confusing, especially for new players.

I appreciate your efforts to make the displayed "+" number reflect the value of the crafted items. But I would advocate for returning to the system before Friday's patch:

+1 for Exceptional Item (increased durability)
    +1 for Socketing a Gem
+1 for Minor Enchantment / Masterwork
+2 for Major Enchantment / Masterwork
+3 for Enchantment associated with Socketed Gem
-1 for Failed Enchantment / Masterwork

    Thank you for your consideration.
