They're not awnings unless they're SunSetter retractable awnings :>

Seriously though planting a bush in front of your rose house would be nice too :>

    A question I asked in Firelotus's Q&A

Question: Will there be signs in the add on store for player run shops that we can make them say what we want, like Fireangels Fine Threads, Time Lords Clock, Shop, Beli's Bait Shop.
At the very least we could provide generic sign types (blacksmith, baker, etc.) and give players ability to add a tooltip. Signs with custom text on them would be a longer term feature that would likely come post launch.

I've noticed they haven't put in signs for NPC vendors yet... seems like a necessity, or else people won't even stop to think about entering the shops. I almost expect it. Then it could just be attached to the building wall as an ornamentation.

As far as Vendors being outside of a row house I believe I read somewhere there is not room for them outside, thus they will have to be inside

Yea, this was the market stalls I was talking about.
In the pic you can see the window board being used both to close the window and to show wares.
Since they go outside the window the window needs to be a bit further in.
Also so that all items wouldn't be a problem you need a wall behind so that the inside is limited.

What about on the second / third floor ... hanging from your window? ... it would be a good place for your founders fruit / berry plant (forgetting the name)

Well it would be nice, if theyre not going to change the lot design, to be able to have different types of housing ornaments that extend from the building but don't take up lot space. This would include shop signs, but could also include ornamental bushes/hedges/trees that tuck to the property wall, maybe awnings. Then, as a solution for planting fruit-bearing plants like the elderberry bush, they could make pots or long, wooden dirt beds, that could be planted in.

That's the quote I read among others that indicates to me they are not willing to design a better row house. As the OP says even a small setback in the first floor level to fit in a simple stall so a vendor can stand there would be a big help for Row Lot owners. Really the only thing we technically need is the person standing there to buy and sell. Everything else is just for appearances.

There are many other design flaws in the rest of the row house structure, but I'm sure they can figure those out themselves.

Should be a red light district where you can look into the windows and see boobies and so forth. :D

dude - seriously? i understand that you might THINK that, but there really is no need to put it in a post - yuck

thought we were trying to keep things clean here....

As for the whole idea of a little vendor shop front in your row house - hurray! i like the idea very, very much. I also really like the idea of little kiosks in a vendor area.

However if someone wants to live in a quiet, residential area inside a city with no vendors and little foot traffic, they'll have a hard time of it..... But if we designate some areas for vendors and some just residential then the price of properties 'zoned commercial' (lol) will probably be higher.... I dunno, all good ideas.

But yeah i am going to have a vendor, so the basic things I will want for that vendor are:
    1) have the choice of either - vendor visible outside without peeps having to trek into my house, OR vendor inside a downstairs store area with access to the upper (home) level restricted (e.g. locking door).
    2) going to want some kind of sign or label for that vendor/shop ....

as for extras that would be nice to have... say i'm in a village with a village size lot... a little kiosk out front would actually be really nice - could be as simple as a big tent with the sides up kind of thing and a table to display wares... don't know if you guys have ever been to an SCA event (Society for Creative Anachronism) but that's what they do mostly and it looks pretty cool and midieval-y.

I'm pretty sure this will never happen because those with larger properties will complain that lower tiers are getting an advantage of their vendors.

Since players can see through windows (last I checked) it wouldnt be difficult to make houses which feature a large shopping window in their front, not unlike:

the above has a small display window on the ground floor of the house.

The above doesnt show it very well, but the window is slightly curved, giving it a nice look.

And there is the above which is basically a display addition that is made of a wood and glass (in medieval times) structure that more or less allows for a protected display shelf.

And these are just some of the ideas that came to me off hand.

You know what...upon closer inspection...isn't that a diorama? It looks painted, not pixelated.
