Not when you know what the dance is supposed to look like. If it's supposed to be a tango and looks like bad disco you know something's wrong. :)

That's what people are expecting and they're in you a b-i-g disappointment.

We see that a lot unfortunately. In the context of what people have expected from SotA and Portalarium you're spot on. Lot of folks hear what they want rather than what's said.. or they don't do their homework. People heard spiritual successor to Ultima and instead of Ultima only heard UO and expected free for all PvP or pick any number of other examples.

I fail to understand why now? R23 is one of the best releases to date and a lot of the puzzle pieces to build a great MMO and single player game are following into place. Patience young ones.

Your guess is as good as anyone's. I stopped trying to figure stuff like that out a long time ago.

No one is going to be happy for two reasons:
    1. They expect SotA to be what they remember through the rose-colored glasses they have welded onto their heads
    2. Portalarium has been pretty ambiguous about the similarities between SotA and Ultima/UO so people will fill in the blanks themselves

That's like saying you can't recognize a beat up junker from a sports car unless you've driven them both. That kind of broad one size fits all logic only goes so far.

It's about the forums, not the game.

True, but given the mindset of gamers these days, even if one little thing is unacceptable in their eyes, they hyper-focus on it and the hyperbole begins.

Ah yeah you're probably right there.. We should round them all up.. lock them in a room and not let them out until they've successfully completed Zork. :)

But people don't buy cars only for looks, which is really the difference between a junker and for instance, a Mercedes. Reliability and maintainability are other factors.

I own a Class C Coupe. Trust me, when you get a maintenance or repair bill, you'll wish you owned a junker. It has also broken down far more than any less luxurious vehicle I've owned. You wouldn't know that unless you owned one, which is the point I was making earlier: If you haven't done it, you don't know it. Things always look better on the surface. Always.

Of all the cars I've owned in the past, I'd give my right arm to get that rusty old 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit back.

:p Zork. I loved that series. Still play them every once in a while. Thankfully the interactive fiction community is still alive and well and building interpreters for those old text-based games.

And don't forget the cancelled expansion pack, the Lost Vale, that had some work done on it already. I remember seeing some of the artwork for it back in the 90's. Really too bad.

Don't get me wrong I'm not completely disagreeing.. but again the logic it only goes so far. Give folks a little credit. While it's true for example we don't have intimate knowledge what has gone on behind the scenes at EA.. we can still see the end results.. which is a fairly consistent track record over the course of 30 years. It doesn't help when the CEO boasts to the shareholders that they can "makes games cheaper than anyone else".

The Internet turned gaming into politics; crowdfunding even more so.
